getParentMember() and getAncestors() methods for a member in a ragged hierarchy returns null, if the parent member for the higher level is missing.

For example, in the 'Sales Ragged' cube of the 'Food Mart' database, '[Israel].[Tel Aviv]' member shows such problem, as there's a missing member between 'Israel' and 'Tel Aviv'.

    This issue seems to exist in both the Mondrian and XMLA drivers. The Mondrian issue is scheduled to be fixed in Mondrian 4.0.
