since both formats (ODF & DOCX) support equations then it was very bad idea to convert equations to picture during conversion - equation should remain editable after conversion
The translation of equations is not yet implemented. It is on our list of not-yet-implemented features (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/odf-converter/DOCX-ODT-features-not-yet-implemented_2.0.xlsx?use_mirror=osdn) and will be taken care of in future releases.
