I followed this nice article http://willhaley.com/blog/create-a-custom-debian-stretch-live-environment-ubuntu-17-zesty/ on building a custom debian live cd and added some packages viz. gdebi, gdm3, slim and installed multibootusb through gdebi and configured slim ( chosen as the default display manager ) for autologin with root and start the desktop program automatically. That's it. Googling helps to solve any issues that arise in the process.
