Hi all, I'm back from the sailing days... Allan, you sent this to the giplogi list (for logistics) instead of the log...@li.... So I reply to the correct one... > Hello, > > I set up a basic version of tinyMCE at http://gipdev.science.ru.nl/giplogi/tinymcetest/test.html. A typical LogiLogi-text can be edited there (see links at top of page). It works fine in my Firefox 1.5.0.1 but it doesn't work in IE 6.0.2900. It might work/not work in other browsers too, I haven't tested yet. I don't see any buttons or anything link-related in the demo. I'm using firefox 2.0.0.3. Here it looks like a plain TinyMCE-window with a text from the old version of LogiLogi. > Change between [View] and [Edit] links to view/edit the text. Adding links isn't supported yet. 'k. greetings, Wybo > @maarten: You mentioned pasting from e.g. MS Word as a possible problem, after some experimentation I now consider this a problem too ;) I did not test that... > - Allan |

Wybo, I've been bussy since my last mail to the list as I moved to live Buenos Aires, at least for a month. Since yesterday we rented an apartment with an internet connection so I'll be able to work on my laptop, so I plan to go on with the UI sketches and work together with the other guys. I also still have to respond back your last mail to the list but I want to complete some of your proposals before replying. Later. On 5/1/07, Wybo Wiersma <wy...@lo...> wrote: > I will be away for a few days, sailing on the Frisian lakes with a > group of friends... I will be away for a few days, sailing on the Frisian lakes with a group of friends... I'll be back on sunday evening. Lately I have been working on a simple site for the LogiLogi Foundation. It will contain basic information about the foundation and it's aims, and it 'll be quite presentable. I'm using the Radiant CMS as a basis for it. I will put it online some time after I return. Also I will be adding some power to the server of Manta in a week or two; extra memory, and a raid-disk, so the server will be less brittle too... I really do wonder what Andrew and Ilona think about Bruno's designs, or what design-ideas they have themselves ? greetings, Wybo Wiersma |

A rake redo_dev_db is needed, and see below for other changes that need attention... ~ Sub-dirs, domain-levels & language-subdomains fixed ~ In response to koetjeboe's (from the RU-team) question about the main_url, and his reference to: http://gipdev.science.ru.nl/giplogi/ I decided to fix this issue, so Manta will now work on domains of an arbitrary level (like s.o.m.e.domain.org) at liking without language- sub-domains, and inside sub-dirs (like /giplogi/). For this a new setting was added to the configuration, which now resides in config/config.rb named use_language_subdomains. Set this to false if you don't have them on your test-server and if you don't want to fix this by adding them to your /etc/hosts file. For running inside a sub-dir you should use Mongrel or Apache. With mongrel you just can do: mongrel_rails start -prefix /mydir to run it inside that sub-dir. ~ Changes ~ Besides the redo_dev_db the configuration is now in config/config.rb. But this file is in the repository as config/config.rb.tmpl because different config-settings are now becoming more usual. So you will need to rename this file to config/config.rb after updating your copy of Manta. Please report all bugs. greetings, Wybo PS: The answer to the question from IRC where the main_url is created: In config/routes.rb there is map.main, from this rails generates the main_url. In this process ActionController::UrlRewriter's rewrite-method is called, which is overidden in lib/extensions/action_controller.rb to add language subdomains (if these are enabled as of my new commit). |

I like your last sketch most of all, and keeping in mind that it is still just a sketch a few minor remarks: - I really like the splitting up of the word LogiLogi across multiple lines. It makes the LL logo even more meaningfull. Maybe though it would be beautifull to complete this by adding .org/ in a simmilar oval just before the Information-bar. - I like the idea of being able to add tags by typing to the Requested url. But maybe we should call it requested tags, and leave the selection of languages, versions, etc. to the information-bar. - About the information-bar and the side-bars; the votes left, and voting-power maybe should be in a side-bar. For the side-bars I would propose: User Preference profile (Default\/) Interface elements (All\/) Preferred language (English\/) Context User group (Public\/) Peer group (Politics\/) Votes left (22) With power (1.0) Where the indentation means that they are below, or determined by the item above them (could/should instead of by indentation be expressed by an oval line around them or something). Also the ()'s are the ovals, and the \/ is the drop-down img you already use. As a side-note: the level of preferred interface elements will most likely be stored in the prefs-profile. - The ID # could be named Alternative #, to make clear that the user can pick differently here... - For the Edit links-tab; note that Manta will get a WYSIWYG-editor which will embedd link-only editing, so that will no longer need it's own tab. Other tabs are History and Printer Friendly To conclude I really like the style and your solutions in terms of reducing the complexity of the interface. I do wonder whether all these things can be accomplished with normal CSS ? (like the oval text-field in the requested-bar ?). greetings, Wybo PS: What do you two think about it Andrew and Ilona ? > It is great to be working with you all in the UI of LL. Hi Andrew, I'm writting to the list so we start chatting all together about the UI. I'm also attaching what I've done so far, so we can also discuss about it and so to enrich each part. I didn't wanted to share it before having the time to discuss about it and have it most finished, but I also now realize that it will be good if I have your opinions while working on it. I'm trying to solve many flaws from the UI as I can see it. There is a need of simplifying thinks for non expert users while still being a useful tool. The sketches I show are the most complex of the layouts, there should be a more simple layout which will show less technic features. Anyway, here are some of the sketches I've done. This was the first approach I did: http://overbits.com/logilogi/images/boceto_ui_pre-alpha.gif And this is the last sketch I've made: http://overbits.com/logilogi/images/boceto_ui_pre-alpha-5.gif It is great to be working with you all in the UI of LL. I have to go now, I might not be able to respond during the weekend but will later. Greetings! I've been thinking about how we should refer to positions and ranges in
Logi's.
This is relevant for a manta plugin that allows one to see place-names
mentioned in a logi on a map that is shown below. This module is my
final assignment for a course in which we have to work with Geographical
information.
Currently position-ranges refer to the characters they span in a way
that is intuitive for humans, but not standard in computer-science,
namely to the characters (like in Ruby ranges including the last
position: 1..1), and not beyond them (like in C strings, and in Ruby
ranges excluding the last position 1...2).
The point is that pointing to positions between characters is easier
with the C-ranges than with the ones we currently use. And we want to
be able to refer to positions between characters in order to be able
to add things just after (or before) words, like a little globe behind
a place-name one can click on to center the map around it. Pointing to
the whitespace just before or after a word is not an option, as after
the diffing the same whitespace is not guaranteed to stick with the
same word in relative space ('a duck', diff with 'a big duck', and the
whitespace after 'big' is gone (because the substring 'duck' was longer
than 'a')).
With the C-style notation we can refer to positions just before or
after a word by giving zero-ranges, like 1...1.
In the example: 'a big duck' 2...2, and 5...5 could refer to the
positions just before and just after 'big'. Of course for this to work
we would have to make sure that the diff always keeps the same white-
space at the end of each word.
What do you people think of this, and especially Charl, as you will be
the one creating C++ implementations of the diff (and thus also of the
position-range classes).
greetings,
Wybo

~ Test added to manta_geo_user ~ I added a test to the manta_geo_user plugin today. This more to test plugin-testing than for the testing of the manta_geo_user-plugin (as the test is quite simple). ~ Testing and making manta-plugins ~ I also added a rake-task to the manta_modulizer plugin which allows the testing of manta_* plugins, like the manta_geo_user (which was renamed from geo_user to manta_geo_user for this purpose). Now you can test all manta-plugins against the full manta-app by running: rake test:manta_plugins I added this as a task besides test:plugins because many of the other plugin-tests currently break for various non-harmfull reasons. If you want to make a manta plugin you can use manta_geo_user as an example as it is really simple and small. Running script/generate plugin will not do the job, as some things have to be added/changed to make plugins work with manta_modulizer (and plugins_plus) Locations important changes (inside vendor/plugin/manta_geo_user) are: app (the application-tree just like in Rails) db/migrate (plain Rails-migrations, note that it's best practice not to add anything to existing tables from manta plugins) lib/geo_user.rb (requirement of manta_modulizer is set here) Rakefile (line 11 was changed to allow rails-like dirs) test/unit/user_test.rb (note the inclusion of the main test_helper, and AllFixtures as the fixtures) ~ Maintainance of (RU's/Nijmegen's) gip-branche ~ I think it would be good if the current trunk were merged into the gip-branch from time to time, especially the stuff regarding plugins is needed for adding pdf-export, etc. as a plugin. So it would be good if anyone of the RU-team takes up the task of maintaining their branch... Wybo |

As it was back at the previous setting again, that is: no active_peer_group_membership. When I checked yesterday I was accidentally looking into the development- db instead of the production-db (which I copied over some time ago for testing). It could be that I changed the setting in the wrong db too last time. So it could/should all work again now. Just in case I checked all users for an active_peer_group_membership, but they're all ok. I accessed in to the site with no logilogi or myopenid cookies. The error is the same as the first times. I enter the url, went to myopenid.com website, entered the correct information and logued in, when redirected to LL the error arised. I spent the last two days writing a short essay about LogiLogi Manta for a philosophy-course I follow. It is in Dutch, so it won't be of any use for you Bruno, but it might be of some interest for the RU- team. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.logilogi.org/pub/LogiLogiPlatonismAsAWorkingProduct_WyboWiersma.pdf I will continue working on the plugins shortly. Wybo Wiersma |

Below in Dutch about Allan making a mockup of the GUI-editor. The link brings one to the current situation (for the body-div), and there's a link at the top to the gui. > Hallo, > > Ik heb een simpele mock-up gemaakt voor de WYSIWYG editor. De oude > situatie staat er in viewing-mode en de nieuwe situatie in > GUI-edit-mode. Het lijkt me het beste om deze twee situaties in het > ontwerpdocument op te nemen. Hieronder een link naar de oude > situatie, door te klikken kom je bij de nieuwe: > > http://gipdev.science.ru.nl/giplogi/mockup-wysiwyg/indexold.html It looks fine - also the adding together of the edit-modi. A problem with it is that there are really many text-options at the top of the editor so (surely for the simple UI) many should be left out..., but as this example looks like TinyMCE, that should be possible, as it is with that editor. Wybo > - Allan PS: I sent it to the sourceforge-list as things beyond logistics like the planning of meetings etc. should go there, not to the gip list... |

If you imagine the primary and secondary versions of tags, as being two sets, then it immediately becomes clear that the distinction is not superfluous. (x in 'b/a' is added to b2, a2, and a1, y in 'a/c' to a2, c2, and c1, if you request 'a', all in a1 is returned, so only x) Sets are un-ordered, and by making a distinction between primary and secondary tags, we can have one layer in a simple way (the initial plan was much more complex - roughly creating a new concept for each new combination of words in an url (& it also involved suffix-trees) - but for pragmatic and esthetic reasons I dropped that and went for taggings of two types). Hey everyone, My name's Ilona, and I'm a 3rd year student of information science. My main interest is in human-machine interaction (mostly the user part), and currently I'm working on a bachelor's thesis aiming to optimize computer interface usability for elderly people. Besides that, I also like working on requirements engineering projects. In my free time, I like playing the piano, dancing and doing fitness training. >From now on, I'll mostly be working on the user interface for LogiLogi, together with Andrew. We've started identifying elements which need to be improved and done some rough sketching. We'll get together soon and mail them around. Take care! Ilona |

My friends describe me as a social, geeky all-rounder. I consider C as my second mother tongue. My working experience includes web development in Java and .NET, and in my spare time I play around with python. Although I prefer foundations of computing science (lots of math and formal methods etc), I consider userfriendliness an important part of building software. Besides being a hacker, I have a profound interest in martial arts: I practice aikido. And I play the piano. For LogiLogi I'll be working largely on the usability of the platform, together with Ilona. I might also be hacking around in javascript, depending on what we need to get done. Ilona and I will present some sketches and ideas on this list shortly. Also, I plan to derive a mathematical specification of the notion of concepts (etc) in LogiLogi, in order to get a better understanding of the formal properties. My hypotheses is that the distinction between primary and secondary tags is superfluous for the underlying model. But as I said, this is something I need to investigate. greetz - Andrew |

A check for this in the model might be nice but I didn't do that yet... Anyway, the bug has been fixed now (I also reset your active peer- group to the default one, so you should be able to login now)... greetings, Wybo PS: It would be great if you joined us on the IRC-channel sometime. People from Nijmegen are also to be found there usually... I will be away for a few days as of an hour, so I won't be there untill sunday evening, but they probably will... > > Wybo > > > > > I couldn't login yet ;) > > > > > > -- > > > Bruno |

Hello everyone (and specifically Bruno), Wybo has requested that everyone from the development team at the Dutch university introduce oneself on the mailing list. My name is Charl. I am a 3rd year computer science student, and I'm a bit of a hacker who likes to be close to the machine (I like assembly). My computer philosophy is: they don't call it "code" for no reason. Of course, if I need to learn Ruby for the sake of LogiLogi, I will. :) I will (at least at first) be working on the diff-algorithm. After some discussion and brainstorming, we decided to run some benchmarks, and see if a significant advantage could be had by re-programming the algorithm in C(++). >From what I understand, you will be working largely on the GUI, so you'll probably be communicating a lot with other members of the team, namely Ilona and Andrew. They should be sending a similar introduction e-mail to the list shortly! Kind regards, Charl |

The URL I use to login is exactly this one: http://brunosarlo.myopenid.com The problem is not when I first enter the full URL. When I'm taken to myopenid.com I checked and LL was working fine. The problem seems to be after I login I'm taken back to LL, then this error raised: NoMethodError in Logi#show Showing app/views/logi/_rating_menu.rhtml where line #9 raised: You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! The error occurred while evaluating nil.power_steps Extracted source (around line #9): 6: <% else %> 7: Peer group: <%= select_tag 'peer_group', options_from_collection_for_select(User.current.peer_groups, "id", "to_s", 8: User.current.active_prefs_profile.active_peer_group) %> 9: Power: <%= select_tag 'power', options_from_collection_for_select(User.current.active_peer_group_membership.power_steps, "to_f", "to_f", 10: User.current.active_peer_group_membership.power_per_vote), :class => 'float' %> 11: <% end %> 12: Rating: <%= select_tag 'score', options_from_collection_for_select(Rating::SCORES_FOR_DROPDOWN, "first", "last", 2.0), > Wybo > > > I couldn't login yet ;) > > > > -- > > Bruno > -- Bruno |

I tried to replicate the error, but at least when logging in with my own account I don't get the error. Also your home-page displays nicely... Note also that I made 2 small commits just yet that do: * extract the database-definition for the geo_user plugin (the small google map at the side showing the user) to the plugin itself (in vendor/plugins/geo_user/db/migrations) * enabled error-reporting for production mode... Making error-messages of the pre-alpha more informative. Could you please try logging in again and then mail the error message if the problem still persists ?
