Is not a dual-licensing scheme a possible solution for this issue? Software makers not willing to deal with the GPL could license liblo from its authors under a commercial license, perhaps paying a reasonable fee significantly lower than the cost of developing a replacement. It is another way of supporting the goals of copyleft, since that commercial version doesn't have to be any different to the GPL one and liblo authors could invest that money into improving it.
