I'm just about to rollout a large installation of Cacti on my network, =
because I find Cacti very user-friendly. However, I would like to be =
able to extract configuration data from the database, because I need to =
make my own front end for our customers (a demand from my evil boss =
:-)).

available?

The default configuration will retain data for a year.  This can be
extended to any time period you like.

Essencially for Disaster Recovery purposes...

Something that would enable 2 (or more) servers=20
to make their own polling and assume the other=20
systems' polling in case of crash...

Think of two router aggregation zones...=20
There should be an ideal place (shorter response times)=20
to place each cactid machine.=20

In case of crash, the distant remote cactid server=20
should take care of updating the information.

PS: This implies of coarse that the information is stored=20
on a networked high-availability filesystem.

set how long data from which graphs are generated is set. I'd like to be
able to keep a long history of data to be able to view graphs about the

The above is correct. Any output to stdout will go into an email and be
mailed to the cacti user. At 1 every 5 minutes this can be a significant
number of email in a short pace of time.

The redirection to /dev/null (> /dev/null 2>&1) make sure you dont get
this

If the rrds aren't changing timestamps you've got a problem.

I hope not. /dev/null is a special device, that accepts anything and
makes it disappear.

No point.

Go to the settings area in cacti and set the logging level to MEDIUM or
HIGH.

Now run php /usr/local/cacti/poller.php from the command line as the
cacti user and check the output.

This sounds like a "rrds are not updating" problem - the cacti forums
have a ton of posts and suggestion regarding this.

Hi,

I'm looking for a possibility to create a graph which contains Data
Sources of different devices over different time periods. Let's say in my
current graph I have three active interfaces, all from different devices.
For historical reasons there are two more Data Sources of another device,
which I need to add to the graph e.g. from May 2004 to July 2004.

Or let's say in December 2004 I will have to remove one of my current
interfaces from this graph (while the interface still remains active in
other graphs, so the RRD will still be updated). For historical reasons I
do not want to "loose" the old data of this interface, but it must stop in
December.

I do not really want to manually copy the data I need between the
different RRDs. Is there a possibility to do such a dynamic graphing
within cacti?

It sounds like you and I are having similar problems.  If I check the
cron logs, I can see where poller runs, and it looks ok - no errors -
but the data is not updating.

Try running the poller from the command line and then look in your rra
folder to see if the rrd files have been updated.  - that might at least
give you something to go on.  In my case if I run the poller manually,
it polls and updates the files, but not if it runs from cron - not sure
why yet

Thanks to some excellent help from this list, I have gotten the apache =
problems worked out, and it appears that I am ready to go with one small =
exception.

In doing some testing, I triggered the poller manually as described in =
the user manual, and it polled my devices and posted the data in the =
/rra folder.  (it took about 45 seconds to run, which I know is well =
under the 300 second limit for switching to the cactid poller)

I checked my cron file, and the following line is in the file

0-59/5 * * * * cacti php /usr/local/cacti/poller.php > /dev/null 2>&1

The other processes in my cron file are running properly (MRTG Polls), =
but upon checking the /rra folder, the timestamps on the rrd files are =
not changing.  I have tried restarting the cron daemon to make sure that =
my configuration is up to date.

I am suspicious that the poller is not placing the data in the right =
spot.  The /dev/null 2>&1 at the end of the cron entry makes me =
suspicious.  I went looking for a /dev/null folder, and did not find =
one.  My suspicion is that the end of this line should point to the rra =
directory, but I'm not sure, can someone confirm this.

I currently have a search running on the computer for any/all .rrd files =
in hopes of locating where the poller or cron is sticking them, =
hopefully that will shine some light on the problem

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be most =
appreciative.  I've been through the manual, and don't find this issue =
addressed.

erm...

it seems from looking at your box you dont seem to have the snmp stuff
for php installed as far as i remember cacti requires it although i'm
not totally sure

you might have to consider checking to see if snmp is installed at all
( net-snmp / ucd-snmp )

if it is... make sure that it's properly started up and configured
