If you have an electric heater (HLT, BK, RIMS, HERMS) then you may not need PID control. A simple on/off control can work, or also with a duty cycle (on for % of time, off for the other). For more fine control, or certainly for propane gas burners, you will need something better. PID control will let you hold very precise temperatures during brew day. https://flows.nodered.org/node/node-red-contrib-pid https://flows.nodered.org/node/node-red-contrib-pid-autotune
(Draft discussion) These are the most basic steps to get NodeRed running on the RaspberryPi, and talking with the BreweryHMI. https://nodered.org/docs/getting-started/raspberrypi 1. Run NodeRed on the RPi 2. Enable auto-start (optional, but recommended) sudo systemctl enable nodered.service 3. Connect to NodeRed either local on the RPi, or from another computer http://localhost:1880

This is just a starting point , which I will add more detail later on. But the basic steps are as follows: 1 - Download and install Ignition Maker Edition https://links.inductiveautomation.com/ignition/maker-edition https://docs.inductiveautomation.com/display/DOC80/Installing+and+Upgrading+Ignition 2 - Install and configure a SQL database server https://docs.inductiveautomation.com/display/DOC80/Installing+MySQL 3 - Import the Brewery HMI project and tags You can download the Brewery HMI project...

Here's another idea for a controller. Install Node-RED on Rpi to manage your I/O, and have that talk to the Brewery HMI (ie. Maker Edition of the Ignition platform). Node-RED on Rpi https://nodered.org/docs/getting-started/raspberrypi Node-RED module for Ignition https://flows.nodered.org/search?term=ignition Source page for the Ignition module to support Node-RED https://github.com/IgnitionModuleDevelopmentCommunity/IgnitionNode-RED Forum article about getting it to work in Ignition with the Maker...
Automation Direct offers an industrial controller that is compatible with Arduino IDE. It uses the same chip as the Arduino MKRZERO. https://facts-engineering.github.io/ You can buy them online from the manufacturer here, with a starter kit $160 (Dec.2020). https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/programmable_controllers/open_source_controllers_(arduino-compatible) Why would you care about that controller? It is a complete unit, case, mounting connectors. It has many I/O modules (inputs,...
The Ignition platform is a commercially available software made by Inductive Automation. It is a development IDE, web server, logic engine, and a user interface all-in-one. I have known about them since it was first released in 2010, and their first major platform update was the release of version 8. That's a personal opinion, but I would consider version 8 to be their second generation platform with the release of the "Perspective Pages" set of features. It's a major step, and cost, to update the...
