I am using pcmf502r

it works fine except that after having been working OK
for a while (like about 1 hour) the system just freezes
dead. Can't be more specific.

It happens to me too on Fedora Core 3. Fixed it by allowing
the machine to use its built in atmel and atmel_cs modules.
Had to get firmware in rpm form from
rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/
1213433/com/atmel-firmware-1.0-1.1.i586.rpm.html
Couldn't install this properly directly so upacked it and
manually dropped firmware files into /lib/firmware (as
opposed to package default of /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware)
