I find it essential to be able to write text vertically - I often need to write with the pencil tool

this is a must feature for annotating techincal drawings, or writing long lines in the margin

Well, xournal is meant for handwritten text, and that works in any
direction. Regarding the text tool, gnome-canvas doesn't seem to support
non-horizontal text items as far as I can tell, so there's just no
solution with the current technical architecture. The gtk3 rewrite might
fare better if its canvas has a non-horizontal text item.
