Following situation: I want to use the highlighter tool with shape recognition being activated, but when using the pen tool it should be deactivated. So, following test case:

1. Activating the highlighter, activating the shape recognition, working with the highlighter.
2. Activating the pen, shape recognition deactivates itself as it should, working with the pen.
3. Activating the highlighter again. Now comes the problem: The shape recognition doesn't re-enable automatically.

The shape recognition should remember its activation state for every tool and change its state according to the selected tool. At present it is being deactivated when changing the tool, but the reactivation fails.

Sorry, I was in the wrong subsection, please move it to "Feature requests" if posiible. :(

I briefly thought about making the behavior you suggest the default (this can be implemented easily) but personally found it quite confusing upon testing (with the ruler at least -- I found it very counterintuitive that clicking back on the highlighter would give me a ruler-highlighter again). I do agree that different people may have different experiences though.

The current behavior is that, when you click on the "pen" or "highlighter" button, this resets the tool back to its default recognizer/ruler settings (by default, off). However, if you instead map the highlighter to a side button (2 or 3), and draw highlighter strokes in that way, then the ruler setting doesn't get reset.

So: do steps 1. and 2. as above, but then, instead of 3., select Options -> Button 2 (or 3) Mapping -> Highlighter. Then draw with button 2 or 3 to get the highlighter with shape recognizer (while the button 1 pen stays without recognizer).

Oh, that's cool! There's still a small problem: I've set the highlighter to the middle mouse button and to enable the shape recognition I have to choose the highlighter once, enable the shape recognition and then switch back to the pen (then the middle button highlighter will have the shape recognition activated, too). I've found out that you can save all the options and thought that this would solve the problem and save the shape recognition state for the highlighter but unfortunately it doesn't so I have to make those steps every Xournal start. By the way, the zoom settings are being saved nicely, but the last opened page of a file isn't being remembered, too.

Saving the changes made to the pen/highlighter settings: it's a controversial feature (or perhaps misfeature). To have the tool settings saved, when you modify a tool's settings (e.g. ruler/shape recognizer, color, thickness, etc.), if you'd like it to become the default for that session, you should do "Tools -> Set as default" (for each tool separately that you wish to change); and then, for the session's defaults to become the defaults for future sessions, save all the options. Yes it's complicated and not ideal, maybe it'll change in a next version.

Last opened page of a file: indeed, xournal doesn't remember this at all. I guess it could be done, it just never occurred to me. I'll add it to the to-do list.

Thanks, that works! Maybe the menu entry should be something like "Set current settings as the tool's default" though that's quite a long description... And a really really last remark: Would be cool to have zoom in/out shortcuts at ctrl+mousewheel. :)

Now I guess this report can be closed. Thanks for the support! :)
