Bob, Vis5d has a limited capacity to overlay NWS sfc obs which are written in the NetCDF format used by NOAA FSL. You may be able to get the data already in that format since it is now used in the new AWIPS system of the NWS, otherwise you would need to convert whatever data you have. As I said above, the ability of Vis5d to display this data is limited. It will allow you to select one field (Temperature, MSL pressure, dewpoint, whatever) and print the text value of that field at the station locations. It will allow you to change the density and font size of the plots so that you can make it readable independent of the scale you are using. There is nothing currently available in vis5d to plot ua observations. There may be a modified vis5d out there to do what you need, if you find it, please let me know. I have plans to extend vis5d+ (http://vis5d.sourceforge.net) to allow a limited station plot to be drawn, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. If you are interested in collaborating on such a project drop me a note. Has anyone written Vis5D file converter/data import utilities that handle either NWS sfc/ua observations or AIRS data?
