When running with full system encryption on an old laptop with no EFI support, if you hide all the text on the pre-boot authentication, the system will not boot to the password dialogue at all, but an unresponsive blinking cursor will show. No forther actions will be possible.
After entire days (not joking) of trying to troubleshoot the problem on two laptops, thinking it was the laptops' fault, I was finally able to use Yumi as per this post: https://sourceforge.net/p/veracrypt/discussion/technical/thread/b32f9cb2/#ca3f
to boot the rescue disk from USB, after which I got the usual password dialogue and I could boot the system.
Disabling the hidden dialogue feature, the system now boots normally off the SSD.
