I no longer see the point of Virtualdub2 whatsoever for video editing.

Since the only driver that is worthwhile is the caching input driver as this is the only one today for compressed video that is able to see and edit all video frames correctly.

As all fcchandlers input drivers are total useless even for old final virtualdub.

Have fun make a simple video 10 frames numbers from 0 to 11. Then test with input drivers with virtualdub using caching input driver and ffchandlers. You will see the problems when reload each video and navigate around. Fcchandlers total useless for video editing.

So if not lossless video editing or full compress whole video and need for editing only Forget virtualdub and find a better video editor.

I know why this editor is bad since we need withvirtualdub2 to use caching input driver only so able to edit correctly. But it has big problems with audio output that been pcm audio only.

Whether this is because of FFmpeg 48khz 16 bit audio been seen as 48khz 32 bit float or other. Or just that FFMPeg only allow Virtualdub2 to use FFmpeg as long as direct copy is not possible. I don't know, I guess maybe more the FFMPeg route except I have never heard ever FFMPeg do that.

It s not because Virtualdub is unable to do this audio copy since Virtualdub final could do it. And also FFMPeg itself can do copy audio.

When I talk of copy audio I mean for both editing using full encode video with smart render to encode video edits. And straight direct copy editing.

This editor is worth nothing without first been able to edit correctly all frames so caching input driver needed to load the video.

But also needed 100% is the source audio to be allowed to direct copy also the same video and also video edits.

You could even say Ok flip FFMpeg if that is the real reason and allow external encoder be used this way.

We set in Virtualdub2 x264 encoder as normal full encode with smart render. Then in external encoder we could set FFMpeg or other to pipe the video and audio to the muxer using copy modes.

This could be done for encoding or even for direct copy alone without any encoder.

Load video do edits export with external encoder direct copy and pipe through external encoders back to muxer or external encoder muxer.

There are many ways to bypass the FFMpeg restrictions imposed on you if is FFMpeg that is imposing this on Virtualdub2 at all.

Either way you have made virtualdub better with caching input driver but along the way has become useless and unworkable.

Please consider fixing this HUGE problem, and make virtualdub once again the best editor to use.

I say all this even though Virtualdub2 hasn't been updated since 19 March 2020 and already maybe a dead duck. I would understand if FFMpeg is the actual issue you want to give use this ability and they say no.

Time then to add in other input drivers to take of the audio. Or fix fcchandlers input drivers so they can see and edit all frames correctly if that is at all possible to fix them. Or maybe you could use the audio part of the fcchanders driver to take care of the source audio direct copy.

Many avenues possible yet none I guess you have explored. We ask why and when if ever you would do this as it is what we all need you to do.

Please make this editor an editor we can use again.

BTW I would rather external encoders last option horrible unsizable interface and fugly and awkward to use. Not to mention unknown options to use there beside needing the correct files and knowledge to use. Here I am thinking not only myself but of any and all existing users new and old getting to grips with it. Unless of course you make it seemless in the background with no user intervention extra setup need for that.

Many option many avenues just none yet you have done for us.

This editor should be the editor everyone should be using but it is compromised unworkable so people don't use it. But it could and should be made better to be capable and usable.

Audio/Video Interleave interface is good for MJPEG, HUFFYUV and other all keyframes formats.
VDub is still useful for full processing, scrips, etc, understanding it's limitations. As nobody is getting paid for this you may try to add those missing features yourself instead :)

Well, I see how this is frustrating. But since the development is on huge pause I cant fix anything now or tomorrow and this means there is nothing to reply except "I'll se this when I can" which is quite boring.

"Anonymous", this is an open forum, you may recieve other users answers. As I said, DirectStreamCopy works on some lossless formats, and VirtualDub is still very useful as is. What you are asking requires heavy non paid work.

I understand your frustration with Virtualdub2's limitations for video editing, especially in regard to handling compressed video and audio issues. It's essential for a video editor to work seamlessly with various input drivers and maintain the integrity of both video and audio. If you're looking for a more reliable video editing solution on Ubuntu, you might want to consider alternatives like CapCut. CapCut offers a user-friendly interface and has been designed to handle a wide range of video editing tasks efficiently. While Virtualdub2 may have its challenges, exploring alternatives like CapCut for Ubuntu could provide you with a smoother and more versatile video editing experience.
