No

Hello,

i have one problem with VirtualDub2. I will describe the situation:

I import the MP4 file, then i mark the 'start' and the 'end' of some frames from the footage to delete it, and then i delete them, then i mark the video as "direct copy", and then i export it as a Direct copy.

But there is a problem: when i play the exported edited file, the deletes frames they are still there...

Why the deleted frames are still in exported file? Is there anything do i wrong? I do not understand why it happens. I do standard procedure to delete frames. And i want to save these changes into my default MP4 file (direct copy).

Can you let me know, please?
Thank you a lot!
N.

    Hi,
first let me admit vd2 is in no way great with direct editing. There are many caveats and unimplemented stuff.
From your description it is unclear if your start/end markers match keyframes, this is necessary.

Hi, i still do not understand how to deal with it...

I want simply cut the 1 minute end of the movie sample, and replace it (merge it) with another one - but in the outupt there is still the old sample, there is no change.
I work with MP4 files, i mark video as Direct Copy, and then i Export it as Direct Stream (i want the original copy, i do not want to render, just merge it).
Do i need to mark start and the end of what i want to merge? I guess so.

HOW TO MAKE IT, HOW TO OPERATE IN VD2, PLEASE? There will be probably some catch with how to mark start/end of of section to delete or so... I do not know.
Is there some detailed 'step by step' manual for this?

I found this old manual for avi files, it is old..
    https://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/virtualdub_join_avi.cfm

p.s.: when i want to cut the part from the file and merge with the another one, do i need first to cut this part and save it to another file and then to add the another movie and merge it? Or can i make it at one session, i.e. cut the part of the video file and add the new video file and merge it? So many questions..

I thought that it will be easy to cut inside of the files, and merge files in VD2. I thought it will be intuitive and workable. But it seems complicated (nad maybe it is not event possible to do such operations). And if it works i do not how, and there is NO MANUAL for newcommers...

Do you know about some other FOSS programme for jobs (cut, merge etc.) what i am asking for? Can you give me same tips, please?

  • Anton Shekhovtsov

    Maybe avidemux can do this.

So in VD2 is not possible to merge files? Or cut scene and save it to the original?

Hello, anybody there? Can you tell me if i can merge files in VD2? Can i cut the scene, add another video file on the end and save it (merge it)???

    Thank you!

    • Anton Shekhovtsov

I really mean direct copy is not generally working. More detail here https://sourceforge.net/p/vdfiltermod/wiki/direct_copy/

You can cut and merge if you apply full compression at the end.

Ok, thank you for the information. And is there any plan to develop the direct copy editation for some future VD2 update?

    • Anton Shekhovtsov

I don't like to talk plans but better don't expect any big change any soon.

Norg you could read the help manual that is included with Virtualdub2 or this site has help also https://sourceforge.net/p/vdfiltermod/wiki/ but should be included in the manual !

    Basic Virtualdub like this.

Direct copy will do so but only cuts will be at I frames or [K]ey frames if you have selected non Key frames edit will do so on the nearest key frame.

You could however encode again but you don't want to do this. And you want to edit at any frames not only Key frames.

So Select Video Full Processing Mode and also select Smart Render just below it. Now you need to match the codec lets say it is mp4 container that has video format h264 - AVC1 use media info or Virtualdub File Information to see. Leave audio as is and will direct copy as default. Now your frames whether I Key frames or not will be in the video output.

You need only match the format video codec codec setting may not matter. The help file is there to help you, and this information is also in the help file.

Merging video depend on whether the video is exact same as the source video for frame size and more, further info in the included in the help file.

With direct stream copy, VD1/2 can only save avi's files with a fps not variable...
The another old VD nammed VirtualDubMod can save mkv's files in direct stream copy...
If not search on internet input plugin for all VD, before many years ago, I used it to can copy directly any most popular video extension, I started use it like that since the first episode of Naruto :)

& to cut well the video & when only you want to direct copy, you must use 2 buttons in the down, arrow left/right with a key yellow under it, that will go automatic to next good frame to can cut very well... But the best way it's with the full procressing mode (even if direct copy it's not allowed), that will allow to cut perfectly everywhere & what you want!

Thank you for your comments. I am especially interested in VirtualDubMod . Can you send me the link to download it? I found VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 - is it the correct one? I guess so (i have also found VirtualDub2 FilterMod, but i guess this is not the one you have on your mind). I want to proccess only MKV and MP4 files only. And i really do not want to spend time to make full proccessing for my large video files - i just want just to cut some scnes and save it - for this the direct stream oparation is the BEST!

So VirtualDubMod can handle both MKV and MP4 in default? Or do i need some plugins for this??

Can you explain me please step by step the procedure to CUT the portion of the video in the middle of the footage in VirtualDubMod ?? Do i need to use for marking the start and the end only those left/right arrows with a yellow key? But i have to confirm the start and end of the selection with last two arrows button (last two on the left side) - am i right?

Sorry I don't have link for plugins import but just search on the net...
If I remember well, VirtualDubMod can handle in direct stream copy AVI & MKV.

You need use those left/right arrows with a yellow key to let VD search the part what you want to delete between two keyframes, it's automatic & very fast than searching by yourself...
& so yes, to marking the start and the end, you must use the two last arrow...

The best way easy, read your video & note the start/end timer of any ADS... Then open VD & start to delete any ADS by starting of the end of the video to the start...

But the problem with direct stream copy like I said in another post:
    - a ADS start at 0h30mn to 0h31mn
    - like need a keyframe to can cut the movie, the keyframe can be before or after 0h30mn & 0h31mn
    - & so you will lost some seconde of the movie or win some seconde of the ADS
The only way to skip that to have a perfect cut, it's need to convert the full video...

But do not hesitate to search on the net for tutorials (especially in English, French, Russian) because it is an old software which was used a lot about +/- 20 years ago ...

Well, i made some experiments with old VD installations i have in my archive. I have many VD forks, i installed them all and i found the solution for what i am looking for, so to edit and export MKV/MP4 in direct copy mode. Some of VD installations can not read MKV/MP4 by default. Some of them can read MKV/MP4 installations, but they do not offer and "Export Direct stream copy" function.

But i found one VD fork that works perfectly with MKV/MP4 both on input and output. It is "VirtualDub2 FilterMod". With this VD fork i can handle with MKV/MP4, i can delete the video frames in footage and save it (i.e. Export it) throught the Direct stream copy function.

I do not know what do you mean with ADS.. But as for the keyframes. Yes, the yellow keyframe buttons they are less sensitive (take some shots/frames), but definitely it is not 1 minute span (tollerance) before the nearest point to mark the start or end of the scene to delete for example.
If you did mean that i can not edit (mark start and end) the footage in Direct stream regime in 1 minute span, this i do not know - i did not check this yet.

So the message the author of this "VirtualDub2": can you implement this feature from "VirtualDub2 Filter Mod" to your developed "VirtualDub2"? I guess it will be fine.

Full Processing Mode and Smart Render

The only frames that are then encoded are those at the edits few before few after. So If you as mentioned above post match your video codec. You can increase the bit rate from say ? 2000 to 3000 to ensure that the picture quality is maintained at or unnoticeable. If forget about this those edit will look bad at same bitrate and suffer.

With Mediainfo after you will notice also the same bitrate is maintained because the video doesn't get changed to reflect bitrate change for only a few edited frames (maybe show different if edited frames are at the video start !). Off course when change container from avi to another using ffmpeg for example you may see very briefly increased bitrate very briefly at those edit points if look at the output progress console while doing so.

I do still see people using Virtualdub Mod but I guess they are using there own or much newer version fork that isn't shared.

Using these plugins https://sourceforge.net/projects/fcchandler/files/ you can do many things with most virtualdub builds. Unknown with Virtualdub Mod have it but is to old and awkward settings layout.

I think the above two guides also keeps the audio with Virtualdub2 when using Direct Copy process with Full Processing Mode and Smart Render you need to try that. So maybe no plugins are then needed Virtualdub2 has already all that is needed.

As i wrote, i found the solution with "VirtualDub2 FilterMod", and it is not so old either (i think 2018). This fork includes everything for what i was looking for - to edit MKV/MP4 in Direct stream mode (and that was my question, the matter of this topic, not any full processing mode -> i was looking for Direct stream solution ONLY, that was all about!). And with "VirtualDub2 FilterMod" i do no need to install anything.

So i guess it might help to those they are looking to edit MKV/MP4 files in Direct stream mode.

So it will nice to implement this feature to any new VD2, including this one on this site.

Are you sure about what you have found? Do you have a link?
"VirtualDub2 FilterMod" sounds weird as "VirtualDub FilterMod" was just old name before I changed it to "VirtualDub2". Some packs on the net (which I never inspect) may include preinstalled plugins like "fcchandler mkv driver" which allow some direct copy work.

I found on my HD many forks of VD, i tested them all. The version i had mention in my previous post is "VirtualDub2 FilterMod 20 Build 43073". This is the name of the folder where i have it. I found this fork in 2018. In the "About VirtualDub2" section i can find out this: Build 43073/release (Sat Nov 24 14:51:58 2018). (I added the mention for this pack that this build is strong together with VirtualDub Fliter Pack 2014 v1.3").

I can see on your thread you have Build 43073. So maybe this "FiletrMod" is fork from your fork.

Yes using a filter pack will make any Virtualdub2 or other Virtualdub version stronger if it doesn't have those filters included.

Reason people make Virtualdub filters and plugins to make Virtualdub better by having them. Long may new and old filters and plugins development continue.

To avoid confusion maybe time for Anton to change the URL of this project to Virtualdub2 so dropping vdfiltermod from the project URL

    This post would then become
    https://sourceforge.net/p/Virtualdub2/tickets/398/

    The homepage would then become
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/Virtualdub2/

It's bad idea to change urls of anything that already became public.

The VD2FM i have (see above) is able to process (edit and save) MKV/MP4 file in Direct Stream copy mode. So it will be nice if this VD2 (on this thread) will include those filters and plugins by default.
