Any user looking for a 3D scanning solution to capture full color 3D models of objects

About Skanect

With Skanect, capturing a full color 3D model of an object, a person or a room has never been so easy and affordable. Skanect transforms your Structure Sensor or Structure Core depth sensor into a low-cost 3D scanner able to create 3D meshes out of real scenes in a few minutes. Enter the world of 3D scanning now! Unlike existing technologies, Skanect can acquire dense 3D information about a scene at up to 30 frames per second. Just move around your Structure Sensor or Structure Core to capture a full set of viewpoints, and you will get a 3D mesh in real time. Skanect makes it easy to 3D scan different kinds of scenes by providing a set of predefined scenarios, suitable for most use cases. You can then share your models online in a few clicks, there’s no need to be a trained professional to start 3D scanning! Skanect leverages consumer-grade 3D cameras like the Structure Sensor and Structure Core, limiting the hardware cost to a fraction of previous 3D scanning solutions.

    "Would be good if only…"

    Posted 2022-05-29

Pros: It was easy to install and get started but that is as far as I can go because nothing works nor is updated by occipital.

Cons: I quickly found out it didn’t support noviciate 3060 and 3070 coda gpu’s. something that at the time was so buried in their site that I couldn’t find it until after contacting support and being given a link to a page that had no direct link from their site. To be fair that was in 2020 but they still don’t support it and while they now say that it doesn’t support any GPU made in the last 3 years their claims of “Good news. Your processor is likely powerful enough….” Is completely false. I get it that gpus have advanced considerably but they haven’t released an update in years. That doesn’t stop them from enticing you to buy by making claims of how you can use skanect for object scanning etc. Hey occipital why are you selling a product as cutting edge that you don’t even support not to mention is as cutting edge as using stone tools in this day and age?

Overall: Don’t buy it. Just about every other option on the market in the price range of the scanner plus an iPad Pro for the lidar on the market is better and actually offers support. Don’t make the same mistake I made and purchase a product that isn’t even good enough to be a paper weight because of the reviews that they conveniently remove the date from make it sound good. Do your research though and you will find that all of the good reviews are dated from the mid 20teens and not anything recent.
