ModSecurity is an open-source, cross-platform web application firewall (WAF) engine for Apache, IIS and Nginx that is developed by Trustwave's SpiderLabs. It has a robust event-based programming language that provides protection from a range of attacks against web applications and allows for HTTP traffic monitoring, logging and real-time analysis. Libmodsecurity is one component of the ModSecurity v3 project. The library codebase serves as an interface to ModSecurity Connectors taking in web traffic and applying traditional ModSecurity processing. In general, it provides the capability to load/interpret rules written in the ModSecurity SecRules format and apply them to HTTP content provided by your application via Connectors. Before starting the compilation process, make sure that you have all the dependencies in place. -

It runs NGINX as a dedicated reverse proxy embedding powerful WAF engines: ModSecurity 3, using OWASP® ModSecurity Core Rule Set (CRS) rules, and NAXSI. It uses acme.sh for Let's Encrypt and other free CA support. A lot of people are self-hosting their own cloud infrastructure (using Nextcloud, Synology, QNAP, a cloud lease server or home-made solutions...), but we can never be too much paranoid about web security for a lot of good reasons. Too much time security is left on the background, or only by using some basic - but not sufficient - options and applications are front-faced to the big bad Internet. -

OpenWAF is the first fully open source Web application protection system (WAF), based on nginx_lua API analysis of HTTP request information. OpenWAF is composed of two functional engines: behavior analysis engine and rule engine. The rule engine mainly analyzes the individual requests, and the behavior analysis engine is mainly responsible for the tracking of the request information. Rule engine inspired by modsecurity and freewaf(lua-resty-waf), the ModSecurity rules will be implemented using lua. The rule engine can be based on the protocol specification, automatic tools, injection attacks, cross site attacks, information leaks and other security exception request, adding support for dynamic rules, timely repair vulnerabilities. -

SuStorID is an advanced Intrusion Detection System (IDS) for web services, based on machine learning. Its name comes from the term “Su Stori”, which in Sardinian language means “The Falcon”. It’s version is experimental, but demonstrates a number of interesting features, that can be readily exploited to detect and act against web attacks. WAFEP is designed to assess the attack vector support of web application firewalls and application IDS/IPS modules. It operates through an "attacker website" with links, forms, browser controls and other request initiators which send a collection of malicious payloads through the WAF to a target application, which in turn, checks which payloads were blocked and which passed successfully. The WAFEP application serves as both the "attacker" website and the "target" website, and thus, should ideally be used in twin instances - one BEHIND the WAF (the defender/target website), and another before the WAF (the attacker website). The payloads can be executed manually through the WAFEP attacker website instance by activating one test case at a time, or automatically, by using a crawling mechanism such as the one implemented in ZAP, Burpsuite, etc. *Note* The target website should be configured in the attacker website FIRST, by accessing: /wafep/config/change-target.jsp
