SoundCloud’s Comment Check brings artists and their fans together through the comments that have been left on their tracks. Since we’re the only platform that gives fans the chance to directly interact with musicians through likes, comments, and reposts, we give artists the chance to react to messages that they’ll never forget. In our latest episode, we sat down with acclaimed singer, songwriter, actor and author JoJo to get her real reactions to what fans are saying on some of her top SoundCloud tracks.
JoJo had the world hooked to her immensely personal and revealing music since she was just 13 years old. Today, she’s just as hungry as ever — her new EP, 'NGL' is out and it’s more than fresh music. It also dives into the themes that she’s covered in her New York Times bestselling memoir, 'Over The Influence'.
When it comes to JoJo’s music, she’s been known for penning emotional jams that capture the essence of what love feels like. Her songs have always explored her inner psyche in a relatable way that the world continues to latch on to. That’s no different with 'NGL' and its focus on exploring what makes her resilient enough to overcome any adversities.
Think of 'NGL' as a spiritual companion to Over The Influence. In the memoir, JoJo explores her harsh childhood and early emotions, to a record label lawsuit that forced her to rebuild from the ground up. JoJo’s latest EP captures the tenacity it takes to persevere on singles like “Porcelain” and “Too Much To Say” where she captures her power in silky smooth, yet extremely stirring vocals.
This all started from JoJo performing in talent shows and singing competitions as a kid. Her debut album, ‘JoJo’ dropped in 2004. It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, was certified platinum by the RIAA, and cemented her as the face of 2000s R&B for an upcoming generation.
Over the years, Jojo’s kept hard at work by releasing several critically acclaimed studio albums, EPs, and mixtapes. She started her own record label, Clover Music, and won a Grammy Award in 2020 for her “Say So” collaboration with PJ Morton. Now, she’s ready to continue her takeover — and her fans are here for it.
The comments on JoJo’s tracks make it clear just how much that her fans identify with her music — one person even quoted a lyric back to her, with JoJo responding, with a smile, “I see what you did there. A little nod to the record.”
One thing that JoJo loves, if you can’t tell, is looking towards the future. When a fan wrote how they’d love for her to “shoot a music video on the beach,” JoJo explains her dream scenario, giving the impression the suggestion is aligned with her future plans. “I’ve always wanted to shoot a video on the beach,” she exclaims. “I’ve always wanted to do a video like Mariah Carey’s ‘Honey.’ Doing the shimmy.” After that, she broke out in a shimmy that she’ll do whenever she gets a chance to make that video. “I just want to be on a yacht!” she admits. “Give me the budget!”
Maybe, she’ll get the chance if she films a video for “Too Much To Say” — or another one of her diaristic songs in the future. In the meantime , listen to “Too Much To Say” below.
