As usual, I recorded everything live, in a single take, with some improvisations, etc. In this way, everything is not perfect; these improvised transitions are the simple application of my feelings guided by a first list of tracks of what I wanted to present. And this is the way it is; I don't like making things look perfect, as it wouldn't represent life, nor art. I hope this 1h set will help you discover an interest in Latin American music and culture; it is a humble gift I give back to the world, to thank all the beauty this music has brought into my life. All the best Felipe

Then we move to the North of Latin America, more precisely to Mexico, to dive into Caribean music. Between salsa, rumba, son, etc...there is such a variety of rhythms and dances that one could do years of research without ending it up. I just picked up a little picture of Latin American "Bolero", one of my favorite styles thanks to it's melodic side, pictured perfectly by a track of Mexican singer Tona la Negra, composed by Wello Ribas. The softness of these musical styles, combined with the power of their rhythm has always amazed me, and are a big part of my musical background.

As a Brazilian from Rio, living in the 90ies, I learned my first guitar chords between Nirvana and Joao Gilberto, 2 perfect opposites on matters of the instrument itself, but really close in terms of the artistic approach, using few instruments, focusing on the few elements that host the "soul" of the music. This "do it yourself" approach is a big part of our music, and I always like to remind myself that "less is more" is often the good answer... For this podcast I picked up a track of Baden Powell, one of the best samba guitar players ever, who used to play concerts with a simple drum/bass/guitar group, like all these punks from Bristol..

After a little interlude to change the ambiance, I went from the mountains to the beach, from the Andes to my home Rio, in the south east of Brazil. Now we enter into the realm of Samba, and all its variations. There are quite a few of them, so I picked up one of the most developed in the 50-60, the jazz-samba style the whole world discovered calls "Bossa nova" (the word "bossa" is actually a slang for "style", by the way..).

I started with a little view of one of my favorite film composers, Argentinian Gustavo Santaolalla. His soundtrack for "Motorcycle Diaries" is just a masterpiece everyone should discover, and the film itself is really great, describing some aspects of the early life of Che Guevara, and great as a debut for a "trip around Latin America". We then move into mountain vibes, getting the inspiration that comes from the Charango - a small string instrument, like an Andean mandoline - and the Andean music. I added a track by Los Incas, a group focused on Andean music but not closed to the past, integrating this culture into a more 60-70ies aesthetics. Also a great source of inspiration for anyone. I added to it 2 tracks I've made with the short story "El livro de arena" by Argentinian Jorge Luis Borges, one of the great writers of the XXth century.

This is a little gift to my friends from Kanto Records. We were discussing preparing a podcast for their soundcloud channel, and I wanted to present some elements of my roots in Latin American music. It would be impossible to present a complete view of Latin America music in a short 1h podcast. Instead, I've tried to picture some different elements of our culture, and how they mix between our roots into something ready for the XXIst century. It is the first podcast I make where you won't find only my tracks but also from other artists, which over the years have served me as inspiration. So here we go. "Representamos uma unica raça mestiça, desde Mexico hasta el Estrecho de Magajanes." "We represent a single mixed race, from Mexico up to the Strait of Magellan." - Ernesto Guevara
