STFC’s mission is to make it possible for a broad range of scientists to answer the most fundamental scientific questions whilst delivering economic benefits to the UK. We do this by supporting thousands of people around the world through funding research, membership to international scientific bodies, and sharing expertise in: materials science, space and ground-based astronomy technologies, laser science, microelectronics, wafer scale manufacturing, particle and nuclear physics, alternative energy production, radio communications and radar. It is an independent, non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
