In vain he pleads with her to wear something else. On the way to the grounds Della's hat frightens passing horses and when the couple joins the picnickers the head-dress is a source of merriment to all except the wearer. Della resolves to part with the hat and throws it into a stream. A fisherman brings it back to her. She buries it in the ground, but a party of excavators discover the hat and return it to the unfortunate owner. Finally Jack effectually destroys the hat and the lovers return home.
