Patented April 1'?, 1906.
Application flied May 24,1904. Renewed March 13, 1906. Serial No. 305,812.
T0 all?, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. ROTH- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to fountain-pens of the type wherein the ink-reservoir is formed of a flexible or elastic sack and inclosed within a barrel of hard material and the feed of ink to the pen or to the sack is accomplished by compressing or dilating said sack.
The principal obj ect of my invention is to provide in a fountain-pen a barrel of rigid material, a flexible or elastic sack inclosed in said barrel and constituting the ink-reservoir, means connected with said sack and arranged to slide about said barrel, whereby the sack may be collapsed or dilated, and a closure for the lower end of said sack arranged to partially surround the pen and the feed therefor.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a fountain-pen embodying main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pen and feed-shield forming flexible sack and rigid barrel.
Referring to the drawings, a is the barrel, formed, preferably, of hard rubber and inclosing a sack d, of flexible or elastic material,
the closure for the lower end of the This saclrdis preferably closed vat its upper end and united to the interior of a cap a', arranged to slide around or about the barrel a to thereby dilate or collapse the sackcl. Inthe lower open end of the sack d and of the barrel a is arranged a hood c, having a tubular extension c The body of the hood @forms a closure for the sack, and the extension c surrounds a feeding-finger a3 and the pen proper, a4. The coiled body a2 of the feeding mechanism is inclosed in the body of the hood c, and the body of the hood c serves to clamp or hold the open end constituting the ink-reservior.
of the sack d to the interior wall of the barrel a.
In the operation'of the pen a slight movement of the cap a serves to force the ink in the reservoir to the feed a2 a3 by compressing the flexible sack (l. A pull upward upon the cap dilates the sack d and serves to suck ink upward into the sack through the tubular extension c of the hood c.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fountain-pen, a rigid barrel, a flexible sack inclosed by said barrel, means secured to the sack and arranged to slide about the barrel to compress or dilate said sack, anda closure for the lower portion of the sack arranged to surround the pen proper and feed therefor.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM R. ROTHW ELL.
