Description

No. 817,514. PATENTED APR.10, 1906.
R. E. POINDEXTER. SAW SET.
APPLICATION FILED MAY2. 1903.
SAW-SET" Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 10, 1906.
Application filed May 2,1903. Serial No. 15534.1.
To all whom it 'nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. PoINDEX- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool for use in setting saw-teeth which can be conveniently used in places where there are no facilities for clamping or holding a saw-set rigidly, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a saw set of my improved construction, a saw being indicated by dotted lines in the position it occupies when the tool is in use; Fig. 2, an under side elevation of said tool; Fig. 3, a central longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a rear elevation thereof.
Said saw-set is of cast metal, preferably steel, and comprises a handle A, having a head A extending vertically across one end and formed with transverse wings A extending out from'each side thereof, provided with forwardly-projecting overhanging engaging points or wings a on their outer ends. A central recess is thus formed between said wings in line with the face of the head A, which face serves as an anvil upon which the teeth are set. As most clearly shown in Fig. 3, said anvil is formed with a straight and flat face from its lower edge 4 to a point 5, and from said point 5 to its upper edge 6 it is tapered at angle which will correspond with the set which it is desired to give the saw-tooth.
In use the tool is placed over the edge of the saw, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the wings or points a engaging one side of the saw and the other side resting against the anvil-face of the head A. The base of the tooth to be set thus rests firmly upon the flat strai ht face of the anvil between the points 4 and 5, and the wide wings a engage with the opposite side of the saw or the opposite side of the teeth. adjacent to the one being set and hold the work steadily upon. said anvil-face during the operation. The tool is held in the left hand by means of the handle A, and is thus firmly engaged with the saw. With a hammer in the right hand the user then strikes a blow upon the point of the saw-tooth s, bending it over the angle 5 of said anvil and giving it the required amount of set. Should a tooth receive a greater amount of set than desired, it can be taken out by raising the tool until the point of said tooth is at or below the point 5 on the anvil-face and striking alight blow with the hammer upon the outside of said teeth, which, as will be readily seen, will straighten said tooth as desired.
A saw-set is thus provided which is very convenient for use in the woods or other places where the ordinary facilities for sharpening and dressing the teeth of the saw are not available.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture a saw-set formed in a single piece comprising a handle having a head on one end formed with a straight fiat anvil-face on its outer surface to support the main body of the tooth and having an angle at a suitable point, over which to bend the point of a tooth, wings extending each way from the head transversely of said handle against which the saw-teeth may abut and thus to act as a gage, said wings being provided with wide overhanging parts which extend forward to a point which will bring their inner faces in front and substantially parallel with the anvil-face, whereby said parts are adapted to engage with the opposite side of the saw from that which rests upon said anvil and to hold it steady thereon while a tooth is being set, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 20th day of April, A. D. 1903.
