- Be it known that I, JOHN S. VAN'RENSSELAER, of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for' Avoiding the Annoying Results of Involuntary Diseharge or Incontinence of V Urine; and I declare the following specification, with the drawings forming part of the same, to be a full and complete description of my invention. 7

It is well known that incontinence of urine is a disease of common'oceurrence, subjecting its patient to most distressing, annoying, and frequently mortifying consequences, and, moreover, is often a disease of, long continuance, afiectingits subject, especially after middle age, for years, and sometimes for life. By means of a well-known upparaths, the common portableIndia-rubber urinal, the inconvenience of the disease during the day-time can be anticipated and provided for, but during the-hours of sleep the involuntary effusion and-frequent-diseharge of urine cannot be anticipated, and consequentlythe unfortunate subject of the disease often wakes to find his bed and person drenched with urine, under circumstances of time and place most distressing to a delicate and modest mind.

The object of my invention is to give relief to the patients by furnishing them: with a reliable apparatus, which shall aid the passage of the fiuid from their persons, as they lie upon their beds, to a'convenieut recep. tacle, whether they be cognizant of its passage or not..

It consists of a proper fitting and disposition of the bed onwhich the patient habitually sleeps, combined with a convenient apparatus to convey his urine into a proper receptacle: 7

Figure 1 represents in perspective the bed A A, which (unless the bedstead be made for the purpose) lies upon a framework of slats, placed, as to its foot, B, on a level with thebed-frame, but basits head raised, say, from fifteen to twenty inches, or at a convenient grade to permit the ready'flow of fluid. to the foot from the head of the bed. 1

The under sheet is secured to its place, so as not to slip downward, by buttoning at its-eorners, or suitable positions, to the bed or mattress. Upon the centreof the sheet, also held to its place by buttons, there is to be placed a sheet of India-rubber cloth, H,-covered with sheeting, or otherwise arranged, to protect the bed from accidental wettings. I

The apparatus to carry away the urine consists of a tube of India rubber, 0, long enough to reach from the person to and over the foot of the bed, and so down into a chamber-pot, bottle, or other suitable receiver, D. To the top of this tube alight metallic funnel or casing, E, Figure 2, of suitable dimensions and form to receive the virilc member, is attached, and to this casing ears or loops e e are appended, to provide :for the attachment of aconvenient waist-belt to suspend and secure the tube E, so that by no ordinary movements it can be separated from the member during sleep. The security is inereased by the coursethe tube is made to take, that is, between the sleeper's legs, and so down out at the foot of the bed, permitting the person to turn round and change this position of the body very considerably, withoutchanging the direction of the tube so as to create any downward strain'upon it, or a twist that might choke the passage for the fluid through it.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

- The combination of the inclined bed A, the India-rubber or other protecting covering H, the tube 0, with its funnel E, and the receiver D, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth in these specifications.
