H. E. KELLEY. ANIMAL TRAP.
Patented Sept. 17, 1889.
WITNESSES. mvemen Q J 1; BY v. flmz/ww Ad WM ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY E. KELLEY, OF NIAGARA FALLS, ASSIGNOR TO THE ONEIDA COM- MUNITY, (LIMITED), OF COMMUNITY, NEIV YORK.
ANIMAL-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,039, dated September 17, 1889.
' Application filed January 11, 1889. Serial No. 296,085. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY E. KELLEY, of Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Animal- Traps, of whichthe following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in an improved construction of the bait-pans of the class of traps in which 'the jaws are held in their set position by a latch or catch engaging the bait-pan and holding the same also in its set position, the object of the invention being to facilitate and cheapen the cost of manufacture and to provide a bait-pan which shall be less liable to break in frosty weather; and to that end the invention consists in a novel construction of the bait-pan and its attachments, as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a trap in its set condition provided with my improved bait-pan. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 00 as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached end View of the attachingshank of the bait-pan. Fig. 4 is atransverse section on line '2 1 Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the baitpan on line 2 z, and Fig. 6 is a plan View of the blank from which the bait-pan is formed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the base of the trap, of the usual and well-known form.
C 0 denote the jaws, which are hinged to posts a a on the aforesaid base and actuated by the spring D.
P is the bait-pan, hinged to a post I) on the base A, and Z designates the latch or catch which interlocks with the hinged end of the bait-pan and holds the jaw O in its set position.
The bait-pan P, with its' attaching-shank P, I form in one piece and from a blank B stamped out of sheet metal. This blank consists of a disk cl, from which extends a flaring shank cl, having a longitudinal notch 11 in the center of its end, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and in order to permit of the use of metal of minimum thickness I strike up from the blank by means of suitable dies corrugations or ribs 4" *r', for the purpose of stiffening the bait-pan and its shank. The longitudinal edges of the shank P, I bend downward on the dotted lines 0 0, and thus provide said shank with longitudinal flanges c c, which serve to stiffen the same. The ends of said flanges between the notch 02 are perforated and form ears 6 e, which project beyond the top of the shank and are hinged to the post Z) by a pin passing through the perforations of the ears and a perforation in the post.
By a rearward and downward extension of one or both ears e, I provide the shank of the bait-pan with a too t, which prevents the pan from being drawn up too far from the base of the trap by an animal attacking the bait.
In setting the trap the jaws are opened in the usual manner and the latch Z swung over and across the top of one of the jaws C, and then by raising the bait-pan the end of the latch enters between the flanges c c and engages the under side of end of the shank P, and thus retains the trap in its set condition.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination'with the post 1), the baitpan P, having the shank P, formed with downward flanges c c and ears 6 e in one piece and hinged by said ears to the aforesaid post, substantially as described and shown.
2. In combination with the spring-actuated jaw, the bait-pan P, having the shank P, formed with flanges c c, terminating with perforated ears 6 c, projecting beyond the top of the aforesaid shank, and the retaining catch or latch Z, having its free end lying between the ears 6 e and adapted to engage the under side of the shank P, substantially as described and shown.
3. In combination with the frame A, springactuated jaw G, and its retaining latch or catch, the bait-pan P, formed with the toe t, for limiting the upward movement of the baitpan, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two witnesses, at Niagara Falls, in .the county of Niagara, in the State of New York, this 3d day of January, 1889.
