Patented Feb. 26, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a device to be worn in the ear for eliminating or damping noise as it reaches the ear of the wearer.
Devices for this purpose are known, which can be inserted into and removed from the auditorycanal in order to seal the latter. These known antiphones are either in form of a hard body, for example metal or plastic of a, shape adapted to permit of their insertion into the external auditory canal, or alternatively they are semisoft bodies for example powder or wax. The solid antiphones present the disadvantage that they exert a strong pressure upon the ear canal and therefore cause pain if worn for any length of time. The semi-soft bags alone present the disadvantage that the sealing of the ear is not effective enough.
My invention is an improved ear plug of kneadible material like wax having the form, depth and diameter of the auditory canal. The figure is a side view of the ear-plug. The kneadible material formin the plug ,is enclosed in a" bag 2 of soft material I like silk, forming at the open end a handle for inserting and removing it from the ear canal. The bag containing the wax material is closed by a flexible disk or plate provided with a little hole in its center through which the tassel of the bag is inserted, separating the tassel 3 from the plug and holding the plate in a horizontally well fixed position. The plate 4 has the shape and the diameter of the outerear-canal, so closing up the entrance of the ear canal against noise and; Water, so that the ear is locked twice, at the inner ear canal by means of the wax-silk-bag and the outer-ear-canal by this plug or disk. The whole device forms one unit, which is inserted into the ear by means of the waxless-tassel, separated from the wax-bag by the tassel, held between the two fingers and the fingertips touching the rubber plate, the plug can be pressed tightly and hygienically into the ear or loosened less or more and removed in a moment. As the plate is separated from the bag by means of the tassel at a fixed distance the airspace between the bag and the disk is forming a stagnant air-cushion, which is effective in closing up or damping the noise. The noise with my invention is therefore damped in three clifierent ways, by the wax-bag, by the stagnant air cushion in between and by the rubber-plate.
I claim:
An ear-plug closing the ear against noise and Water, comprising a cylindrical plug of kneadible material such as wax, enclosed in a silken bag which is open at one end, the open end of the bag being closed by a flexible disk, which is shaped to fit the outer-ear and is provided with a small hole in the middle, which receives and closes the bag and forms a tassel from the open end of the bag, which passes through the disk to provide a handle for inserting and removing the ear-plug.
