Description
Oct. 22, 193 A. J. RlC HARDSN ET AL HAMMER Filed June 25, 1932 character of Patent2d Oct. 22, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAMMEE Arthur James Richardson and Edward James Richardson, Baltmore, Mal.
Application June 25, 1932, Serial No. 619,352
5 Claims.
by brick masons.
The object of the invention is to improve the the blades removable a hammer of this type by making for sharpening or the substitution of a sharpened blade or to prevent the edges of the blades sides of a tool bag in from cutting through the which the hammer may be carried. Another feature is the interlock between the blade and the and 01; the handle which prevents the head from fiying of of the handle as it would otherwise occasionally do.
The blade is secured to a fiange of the head by a bclt which is set at an incline, so that when it is tightened up, 11: draws the end notch at the end of of the blade clown into a the handle and efiectively holds the parts together in interlocked relation.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the complete hammer;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view therethrough;
Fig. 3 is a similar view at right angles to Fig.
2, and taken through the head;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the handle shoe detached; and
the strips 4. and is secured thereto as by rivets 6. The strips 4 they join the portion viding shoulders 1 bolts 01' are somewhat wider where 3 than said portion, prowhich abut against the back face of the head l, t0 properl dispose the portion 3 in the head.
The solid and portion 3 is provided with a notch 8, in the upper side thereof, shown as slightly inclined to receive a tongue 9 formed on the lower and of a blade Il). The upper side of the head l 15 also provided with a notch H therein, in
which the blade l0 is seated and an opening l2 extends from the notch Il to the opening 2 to receive the tongue 9.
The head l is provided with an upstanding oblique fiange l3 ag abuts. The blade is ainst which the blade HZ! se0ured in place by a boit l4, the head of which is preterably of polygonal shape and fits in a formed in the face 0 similarly shaped groove !5 1 the blade IE1, so that the bolt will remain rigid while the nut (6 may be turned thereon to tighten up the bolt and may then be locked in place as by a look washer and cotter pin. The boit is set at an oblique angle so that when the mit 15 tightened up and the 5 blade is drawn toward the flange l3, it also draws the tongue down tightly in the notch 8 to seeurely interlock with the handle shoe and hold the handle against removal.
By maklng the blades removable they may be 10 taken out and sharpened or a new blade substituted without the necessity of temporarily losing the use of the entire hammer. The brick mason may carry several blades and substitute them whenever desired in a very simple manner. 15 Blades of diierent characters may be used instead of the form shown, such as pcks, hammer claws, toothed blades, or the like. Any of these may be substituted for the blade in the hammer in a very simple manner or the blade may be 20 removed and carried separately in the tool bag, so that it will not out through the sides of the bag as it would if carried on the hammer. The use of a hammer of this character eliminates the necessity for a. scotch or double-ended chisel.
in removing or replacing a blade, it is only necessary to remove the bolt I4, and then insert a new or sharpened blade or other tool in the notches 8 and H, with the tongue 9, projecting through the opening l2 and into the notch 8, 30
and then replace the boit which may be done very quickly and easily and the blade when in place securely holds the head on the handle and prevents it from flying off.
While we have developed this hammer primarily 35 for use by brick masons, nevertheless the features of our hammer may be used in other types of hammers as desired without departing from our invention.
We claim,
1. A hammer comprising a head having a handle receiving opening therein, a handle member fitted into said opening and having a transversely extending notch in the upper sde thereof, a blade having a tongue arranged transversely o! 46 the length of the handle member and extending inco the upper side of the head and into said notch in interfitting relation With the handle member preventing removal thereof from the head, a fiange upstanding from the head and re- 50 ceiving the blade in abutting relation, and means for removably securing the blade to the flange.
2. A hammer comprising a head having a handle receiving opening therein, a handle member fitted to said opening and having a notch arranged transversely of the longitudinal axis there- 01 in the upper side thereof, said head having a transverse recess in the upper side thereof, and an opening extending downwardly from said re cess to the handle receiving opening, 29. second member fitted in the recess in the head and having a tongue extending through the downwardly extending openingand into the notch in the handle member across its entrance path and preventing removal of the handle member from the head, and means extending through the second member and a part of the head for securing ihe second member to the head.
3. A hammer including a head, said head having a notch which extends thereacross and provided with an opening of restricted width which torms a continuation et the notch, the head having a fiange, a. blade fitted to the hotch and resting against the fiange and having a tongue which extends through the opening and into a handle, and means extending through the blade and flange 1or securing the blade to the head.
4. A device of the character described including ahead and handle, the head having an integral upstanding oblique fiange and provided with an oblique opening, one side of which is in line with one side 01 the oblique fiange, the head provided 5. A devise or the character described includ- 1o ing ahead having a mortise extending in one direction, the head having an opening intersecting the mortise and provided with a notch leading to the opening, a handle, a shoe including a tenon adapted to enter and fit the mortise in the head, 15
and provided With a notch in position and dis- V posed to register with the notch in the head when the tenon is in the mortiee, the shoe having side strips in position to embrase and be secured ro the sides of the handle, a, biade extending into :0
the notch and opening in the head and into the notch in the shoe, and means for securing the blade to the head whereby all of the parts are interlocked and heid rigidly together.
