This invention relates generally to indicators, and has particular reference to a device for indicating by reflection through a floor, wall, partition or the like, whether or not a lamp hidden 5 from view by said floor or the like is lighted. The invention finds its principal application to dwelling houses, where there is a marked tendency to forget to extinguish the cellar light, thus resulting in a waste of current.
It is the main object of the present invention to provide a simple, effective but inexpensive indicating device of this nature, which is constructed as a unit and may be readily installed at a point where it 5; to be observed.
will be obtrusive and likely More particularly, the invention resides in a device of the indicated character which includes a tubular body composed of telescopically associated sections, to render said body longitudinally adjustable to coincide with the depth of a floor or 'the thickness of a wall, partition or the like, and in which a reflector is carried by and is disposed exteriorly of one end of the body in such a manner as to permit of the setting of said reflector at various angles to properly reflect the light of a lamp through said body, the section of the body carrying the reflector being turnable to a position to insure the reflection of the light from said lamp.
The invention further resides in the provision of a device of the character previously specified which includes means at the opposite ends of the body for securing the sections of the body in longitudinally adjusted installed position, and which means also serves to maintain the body sections in proper relatively turned relation to obtain the reflection of the light of the lamp.
With the above recited. and other objects in view, reference is made to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which there 'is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope of the same.

The upper section 5 is provided with an enlarged cross sectionally angular end '7 defining a rabbeted seat within which a glass or other transparent closure disk 8 is arranged and secured to dispose the upper surface flush with the upper end of the section 5. The end 7 is formed with an outwardly projecting, preferably annular flange 9. The lower section 6 is formed at its lower end with an outwardly projecting, preferably annular flange 10, and said flange is provided with a depending lug or ear 11. The device further includes a reflector designated generally by the reference character B, which comprises a reflecting element or mirror 12 and a supporting frame or holder 13 provided with a bracket 14. The bracket is fulcrumed as at 15 to the lug 7O or ear 11 for swinging movement to dispose the reflector at various angular positions exteriorly of the end of the body A. The bracket 14 is further formed with an arcuate slot 16 struck from the center of the fulcrum point 15, through which a guiding and setting screw 17 extends, which screw is anchored in the lug or ear 11.
In use, the indicating device is designed to be installed so that the body A extends through a floor, wall, partition or other element. In the present instance, the device is shown as installed in a floor C over a cellar or lower compartment D, in which cellar or compartment a lamp E is disposed. In this instance, the upper section 5 extends through an opening F in the floor, with the upper end '7 and the flange 9 countersunk therein to dispose the same flush with the upper surface of the floor. This section is secured by screws 18 or other equivalent fastening devices. The lower section 6 extends upwardly through an opening G in a strip I-I attached to adjacent floor beams I, with the upper end of the section 6 telescopically arranged within the lower end of the upper section 5. Obviously, the sections 5 and 6 are adjusted longitudinally to coincide with the thickness of the floor C and the lower section 6 is turned with reference to the upper section 5 and the reflector B angularly adjusted until the light of the lamp E is reflected by said reflector through the body A. When thus adjusted, the setting screw 1'7 is tightened and screws or equivalent fastening devices 19 are engaged through the flange 10 and anchored in the strip G. The device will be so located that it will be readily observed, whereby to indicate the lighted or extinguished condition of the lamp E. For convenience, if desired, a control switch J for the lamp E may be located adjacent the indicating device, as illustrated in the drawing.
From the foregoing, it will thus be seen that an indicator for the purpose set forth has been devised which is simple, inexpensive and effective, and which is constructed as a unit, capable of being readily installed and adjustable to properly position the same for reflection of the light from the lamp with which it is to cooperate.
What is claimed is:
1. An indicating device of the character set forth and forthe purpose specified including a longitudinally adjustable tubular body comprising a pair of telescopically associated slidable and relatively turnable sections and a reflector dis-1 posed exteriorly of and supported by the outer justment and means at the opposite ends of the body for securing said body sections in longitudinally adjusted and relatively turned relation, said means consisting of portions projecting outwardly from the ends of the sections and substantially perpendicular to the axis of the body for the reception therethrough of securing means.

As anew article of manufacture, an indicating device of the character set forth and for the purpose specified including a longitudinally adjustable tubular body comprising a pair of telescopically associated slidable and relatively turnable sections and projecting portions at the outer ends thereof protruding outwardly therefromand in planes disposed substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body for receiving therethrough securing means to hold the body sections in longitudinally adjusted and relatively turned positions, a reflector, a reflector support carried by one of said portions and inter, engaging means on'the reflector and reflector support for adjusting the angular ity of said reflector.
