Description
Aug. 11, 1931. M. A. RICE SKATE SHARPENER Original Filed on. 20, 1928 WF-WZ INVENTOR ATTOR n'EY Patented Aug. 11, 1 931 UNITED STATES PATENrYon-ucE MAURICE A. RICE, F CONCORD, NEW
SKATE SHABPENER:
Application filed October 20, 1928, Seria1 no; 313,867. Renewed. January 8, 1931. f
This invention relates to sharpeners and its general object is to provide a hand sharpener for skates that is rimarily adapted to finish or complete the s arpening ofv the ice 5 engaging surface of the runner of skates in a manner whereby a perfect skating surface is assured.
Another object of the invention is-to provide a hand sharpener for skates that will sharpen the blade of a skate after the same has worn down adjacent to the blade, brace or support. 8
A further object of the invention is to provide a skate sharpener that has stone for its abrasive element, with guards for the stone and the guards also act as guides during the sharpening operation. A still further obj ect of the inventionis to provide a skate sharpener that is extremely 2 simple in construction, inexpensive tomanufacture, easy to use and efiicient in operation and service. This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. 1
. Indescribing my invention in detail, ref
erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like Referring to the drawings in detail, the
letter A indicates an ice skate of a well known construction and B the blade thereof. While I have illustrated my sharpener in use upon a skate of the type vas shown, it will be obvious that it can be used on ice skates of all ty es. The blade B has cits ice engaging sur ace 5 formed with a longitudinally disposed groove as will be noted upon inspection'of-Figures 2 to 5 inclusive.- a I The sharpener includes a stone 1 that is 63 substantially wedge shape in cross section and has a roundedsmall edge 2 that is adapted for fitting engagement 1n the'groove Y of the blade B.. V r
The stone is formed with spaced parallel to openings arranged adjacent, the top or enlarged edge thereof, and these openings may be reinforced by sleeves if it is found desirable, but in an event pins 3 are passed through-the openings and are formed-with I headso'n their opposite ends for the purpose of securing plates't to the pins, that not only providea handle as well a'sa guard for the stone, but -theplates extend for the greatest portion ofthe'ir lower edges, belowthe small or'lower edge of the stone as suggested in Figure 1 to provide guides. The plates 4 are arranged upon opposite sides of the stone and'are loosely'mounted on the pins so that they may be moved if desired in a ,plane'as suggested in Figure 3.
- The forward corners of theplates 4 are beveled .or cut-away, and the lower cut-away portions which fordistincti'on are indicated by the reference numeral 5 provide for the projection'of tlie'forward lower edge of the stone beyond the cut-away portions soith'at when a-blade has become worn down to adjacent' the brace or support thereof, thepro jecting portion of-the stone will be able to engage the ice-engaging surface of the blade as will be apparent. I r
1 One of the ends of'th'e stone terminate approximately in'alignme'nt with one of the endsof the plates, and'these mentionedends 790 constitute'the forward or. front end of the device, but it will be noted that the stone is considerably longer than the plates and extends beyond the rear ends thereof for a purpose which will be presently apparent. ".95
From the above description and disclosure of the drawings, it will be obvious that I have provided a sharpener that is primarily designed for finishing and completing the ice engaging surface of the blade of a skate, and due to providing a stone with a rounded lower edge as shown, with the rounded lower edge being of a size to be received in the longltudinally disposed groove of the blade, the sharpener will remove all rough surfaces from the groove as well as from the outer edges thereof when the shar ener is used in the manner as illustrated in Fi ures 1, 2 and 3. v
11 order to retain the small edge of the stone rounded in cross section as shown, the blade of the skate is reciprocated from its full line position as shown in Figure 3 to its dotted line position, and this sharpening action is made possible by the novel means of securing the plates to the stone.
v The rearward projecting end of the stone is primarily used for removing burrs, roughened places and the like upon theopposite sides of the blade adjacent its ice engaging surface, and when this function is accomplished, the sharpener is disposed with respect, to the skate blade in the manner as shown in Figures 4 and 5. 7
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of m invention will be readily apparent.
I esire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: i 1. A sharpener of the character described comprising a stone, plates loosely secured upon opposite sides of said stone to allow swinging movement thereof and terminating below one of the ed es of the stone, said plates having one 0%their lower corners cut-away for disposing a corner of the stone below the cut-away ortions. V
2. A sharpener of the character described comprising a stone substantially wedge shape in cross section, plates loosely secured to said stone to allow swinging movement thereof and disposed upon opposite sides of the stone and below the same, said plates having the greatest portion of the lower edges disposed below the small edge of said stone, the remaining ortion of the lower edges being outawa or disposing a corner of the stone below t e plates, and said stone being of a length for disposin a portion thereof beyond one of the ends 0- said plates.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature;
' .MAURICE A.. RICE.
