Description

June 14, 1932. F. COLABRESE COMBINED GASKET AND PROTECTOR FOR CARBIDE LAMPS Filed Oct. 7, 1951 ATTORNEY Patented June 14, 1932 UNITED STATES FRANCESCO COLABRESE, OF ALBERT, WEST VIRGINIA COMBINED GASKET AND PROTECTOR FOR CARBIDE LAMPS Application filed October 7, 1931.
This invention relates to combined gaskets and protectors for miners carbide lamps and similar devices and has for the primary object, the provision of a device of the above stated character which will provide an eiiilatter when emptying or removing carbide or foreign matter therefrom and which will be prevented from becoming disconnected when the lamp is disassembled thereby obviating the loss thereof as now frequent with gaskets of the conventional type.
lVith this and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section illustrating a combined gasket and pro tector applied to a carbide lamp constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating the combined gasket and protector.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a conventional type of carbide lamp including the burner or upper structure 2 threaded to the neck 3 of a bottom 4. By reference toFigure 1 it will be seen that the bottom 4 is provided with a neck which threads into the neck of the burner or upper structure and the lower edge of the neck of the burner or upper structure is flared as shown at 5 to provide a flange.
i structed from rubber or any other material Serial No. 567,513.
suitable for the purpose and includes a body 9 consisting of an annular portion 10 and a conical shaped portion 11 provided with an opening 12 to receive or permit the neck of the bottom of the lamp to extend therethrough with the flange 5 resting upon the conical shaped portion 11. The cylindrical shaped portion 10 of the body 9 fits about the bottom 4 of the lamp with the bead 8 fitting within an annular groove as clearly shown in Figure 1, consequently firmly securing the combined gasket and protector to the lamp.
Then the flange 5 is seated tightly against the conical shaped portion 10 the escape of gas from the lamp is prevented and when the burner or upper structure 1 is removed from the bottom 1- of the lamp, the body 9 remains on the bottom 4 and protects the latter from injury during the emptying of the bottom 4 of carbide or other foreign matter. The customary practice of miners or other people employing lamps of this character is to strike the bottom 4 against an object to loosen the exhausted carbide so that it may be easily emptied and this practice soon injures the bottom 4 and to prevent such injuries, the body 9 is provided and this body tightly gripping the bottom a of the lamp will prevent the loss of the device when the lamp is disassembled.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a gas lamp having a fuel bowl provided with cylindrical and frusto-conical portions and an attaching neck with a burner deta-chably secured thereto, a cushioned body to form a combined gasket and protector mounted on the bowl and conformable to the cylindrical and frusto-coni cal portions of the bowl and clamped against the frusto-conical portion by the burner.
2. A combined gasket and protector com- Chi prising a cushioned body having integral frusto-conical and cylindrical portions for mounting on the bowl of an acetylene lamp and conformable with the frusto-conical and cylindrical portions of the lamp, said frustoconical portion of the body having an opening receiving the attaching neck of the lamp and clamped to the frusto-conical portion of the lamp by a lamp burner.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANCESCO 'COLABRESE.
