MINING APPARATUS.
Application filed March 2a, 1924, Serial No. 201,390; Renewed July 6, 1927.
My invention relates to mining apparatus.
It has for its object toprovide an improved mining apparatus especially adapted to use in entry or room cutting where it is desirable '5 for the machine to operate from its truck. A further object of my invention is to provide an improved swinging'mechanism for such a machine whereby the cutter bar may be swung at diti'erent desired speeds relative to during movement to or from cutting position or during cutting.- A. still further object of my invention is to provide improved truck driving mechanism and more particularly an improved truck driv ng 15 mechanism especially adapted to a machine of this type and to a machine having thereon my improved bar swinging mechanism above mentioned. These and other objects and advantages ofmy invention will hereinafter 30 more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have shown for purposes of illustration one form which my inventions may assume in practice.
In these drawings,
1 Fig. 1 plan view of a mining apparatus constructed in accordance with my improvement, certain portions being broken away to facilitate illustration. v
Fig. 2 is a side elevation 0 pa-ratus.
Fig. 3 is as enlarged detail of the rear end of the machine and its swinging mechanism, certain portions being shown in vertical secoi' the same aption. I 33 lis a detail sectional View of the clutch mechanism.
Fig. 5 is a diagrannnatic view showing-the machine asused in circular cutting.
F 6 is a similar View showing the ma- 40 chine operating in accordance with the Arcwall method. v
In this illustrative construction I have shown a machine of the general character described and claimed in-m copending application Ser. No. 508,390 filed Oct. 17. 1921, including generally a wheeled truck l'adapted to run over a mine track and carrying thereon an adjustable bocy section 2 vertically adjustable by hand adjusting means, generally designated 3, in such manner that the section 2 is maintained in parallelism with the trackway in its diii'erent elevated positions, although obviously such'a construction is not necessary. Upon this body 2 is also carried a complete lDO IJOIIl cutting mining machine 4:
which may be of any suitable type, but is herein of a well known chain fed room and piller type having areversi-ble electric motor (not. shown), and a projecting cutter bar 5., this machine herein being swivellcd on the body 2., As shown, the latter also carries suit able truckwheel driving mechanism 6, detachable machine locking mechanism 7, and cable reel mechanism 8, while the mining ma chine, is connected for swinging relative to its swivel and for driving a gear 9 of the truck driving mechanism 6, all in an improved manner hereinafterdescribed.
Reterringmore particularly to my improved construction it will be'noted that the mining machine 4 has fixed to the bottom thereoi as by screws 10, a depending guard 11 having an axial portion 12 seated in the bottom of the mining machine and a depending larger axial bearing 13 rotatable in large'spur gear 14 fixed as by bolts 15 to apart 16 carried on v the body 2 as will hereinafterbe described, a plate 17 held in place by screws acting toretain the member 13 in the desired relation to the stationary'gear .and'other suitable bear- .ings18 of larger diameter than the bearing 13 also being provided between the member 11 and the stationary gear 14. Moreover, it
it meshes at a point near'the rear of the ma chinewith a much smaller gear 19 journaled on an axis 20 suitably carried upon the bottom of the machine. This gear 19 in turn meshes with a still smaller gear 21 similarly journaled on a parallel axis 22 and carrying above it, alarger gear 23 which in turn aeshes with a spur pinioni24 fixed on the lower-end 01"? a driving shaft 25 extending vertically upward and connectible by a clutch 260i any suitable type, herein shown in detail inFig.v 4, with achain sprocket 27, the construction being such that when the clutch 26 is thrown in the sprocket 27 acts a driving sprocket driving the shaft, while when the clutch is thrown out, the sprocket 27 acts as an idler sprocket. More particularly itwill be noted that the sprocket 2? is engaged-by the feed chain 28 of themachine which is in turn driven by'a feed operating member or sprocket 29 rotatable. as usual in such machines through feeding mechanism (not shown) at a fast speed in one direction or at a slow speedin the other direction, the feed chain being disposable rel ative thereto and the sprocket 27 and cooperating lateral guide sprockets 30, 31 and abutments 32, 33, 84 in a well known manner. 8
Referring more particularly to the truck driving mechanism, it will be noted that the usual truck driving gear 35 01": such a machine here meshes with a spur gear 36 ournaled in suitable bearings around the upper end of the shaft 25, and below the member 27 and that this gear 36 in turn is adapted to mesh with the gear 9 of the truck driving mechanism in such manner as to provide power for the propulsion of the wheels of the truck 1 which are as in a usual construction connected to the latter mechanism. More particularly, it will be noted that this truck driving gear 9 will be constantly rotated by the gears 35 and 36 when the'gears 36 and 9 are in mesh and that control oitruck movement is'eliected through a friction mechanism operated by a control-' 'lin member 37 in a usual manner. The above mentioned part 16 to which the gear 14 is secured is slidably mounted in guides 88 with which clamping members 39, also attached to the part- 16 are engageable. it will therefore be understood that during cutting with such a machine as that disclosed, it is initially moved forward bodily in the guides 38 on the truck body 2 to a limited extent and that the clamps 39 are then clamped into position, the
ears 86 and 9 thus bein out of mesh durin V n a the swinging movement of the machine dur- 111g cutting.
Inthe operation of my improved machine, when for example it is making a cut of the type shown in Fig. 5, the chain 28 is first fixed to a suitable point in advance of the machine, a jack 'or the end of the truck, and the whole machine 4, with its connected parts is then moved forward on the guides 88 to the desired amount to permit the gears 86 and 9 to clear one another, the clamps 89 then being set. Then by simply'connectmg the chain 28 to an abutment 32 as indicated and the feed, pref; erahly the usual fast feed, power is transmitted to the feed operating member 29 in such manner as to make t draw in the chain and I thereby causethe machine to be swung quick- 1y about its swivel or hearing 18 from the longitudinal posit-ion shown in Fig. 1 to the lateral. position shown in full lines in Fig. 5. The motor is run during this operation; in a direction opposite to its direction during cutting. V hen the bar is in this position, by again connecting the chain to a suitable abutment in front oi the machine, the machine is then suitably'advanced bodily toward the ing hr-greinabove described as carried on the truck, in such manner thatthe tip of the bar which is doing the cutting, which would otherwise travel too rapidly, is moved at the desired cuttin eed the same travellnw t: 7 2:
through an arc of 180 or more to cut out an arcuate kerf such as indicated in dotted lines in Fig, 5. To hold the machine in its angular position during the sumping and withdrawing cuts any suitable means "may obviously beemployed; Obviously this operation may be repeated in another entry or room while the coal is being removed inthe room or entry ust cut. it will also be evident that by suitably reversely connecting the chain, as indicated in dotted lines, and operating the fast feed, the machine may be swung back to its longitudinal position, whereupon, following'a release or" the clamping means 39 and a suitableconnection of the chain 28 to a usual abutment 84 carried on the rear end of the truck, the machine may be moved bodily backward on the guides 38 to bring the gears 86 and 9 into mesh and enable the lock tobe set, the machine being then ready for transport to another place assoonas the jacks l0 are released and placed in their transportposition on the truck operate the machine'as shown in Fig. 6, the
bar is first s .vung laterally into the full linecated, i. e. until it reache. the left hand bottom dotted line position indicated. Obviously, by again suitably connecting the feed chain. d using the slow feed, the whole machine may be moved rearward to finish the cut, i. 0., until thebar occupies the right hand iottom dotted line position, whereupon the machine may be prepared for transport as previously described. It will also be evident that by reversely receiving the chain in a well known manner a reverse operation of the gearing may be obtained, the abutment 33 then being used in the fast swinging.
As a result of my improved construc n i t will be observed that the tip 01 the chine bar is adapted to be moved at a slow Similarly, when it is desired to In preparing for transport speed adapting it for cutting ratherthan at the higher speed which, by reason of the distance between the tip of the bar and t io machine axis, would otherwise result it the bar was swung at the same s seed as the slow feed 'eally described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that thus form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms" withoutdeparting from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
