HAIR-DRESSING APPLIANCE.

My invention relates to improvements in hair dressing appliances and more particularly to means for treating human hair to impart thereto a so-called permanent Wave, in which a heated chamber is employed to enclose the hair Wrapped, or spirally Wound, upon an iron or core.
The devices nonr employed for this purpose, by reason of their construction and design, when in use, become excessively hot superficially which contributes delays in the operations as Well as discomfort to the operator.
The object of my invention is to provide a permanent Waving device of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, comprising a heating chamber constructed as an openended tubiform, having an electrical resistance-Winding thereabout and electrically insulated therefrom, heat insulated material covering the resistance-Winding and an external covering of fiber cloth built up as a body of laminee relatively adhesively secured, the superficial lamina facilitating the manipulation of the device, and the laminas ar- 'anged to produce maximum heat to the heating chamber and minimum heat to the manipulated surface.
My improvements consist in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully, clearly and concisely described, definitely pointed out in my claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which z- Fig. 1 is an elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an end view of the device, and Fig. 8 is an enlarged, fragmental longitudinal sectional elcvation showing the detailed structure.
referring by numerals to the dra-Wing, 4 designates the heating chamber, or core, which by preference is an open-ended tube, preferably metallic, and by further prefer ence a section of tubing made of aluminum. Over the external surface of the tube 4, for a major portion of its length is a coating 5 of cement,to which is secured,by adhesion, a layer 6, of sheet asbestos. A second coating of cement 7 is applied to the asbestos layer 6 and a second layer 8 of sheet asbestos is secured to the first layer 6. Over this incombustible covering for the tube 4 is applied a relatively thick layer, or bed 9, of cement in which is embedded an electrical heat unit in the form of a resistance Winding 10. A second incombustible covering 11 of relatively cemented layers of sheet asbestos is secured to the cement layer 9 and over the covering 11 is applied a second layer 12, or bed, of cement in which is embedded a second heat unit 13, being a continuation of the unit 10. To the initial end of the winding 10, and to the terminal end of the Winding 13 are attached cords 14 for connection with an electrical outlet. Adhesively secured to the layer 12 of cement is an incombustible cover 15 of sheet asbestos to which is applied a coating 16 of cement, over which there is a heat insulating body 17 such as alayer of sheet cork. and finally there is adhesively secured to the body 17, a layer 18`of material, such as felt, Which is manipulative with maximum facility.
The ends of the described body are trimmed, or squared and each coated with a layer 19 of cement, over Which is secured an incombustible cover 20 in the form 0f a dise of sheet asbestos, to which is adhesively secured a heat insulator 21 in the form of a disc of sheet cork and over Which are adhesively secured discs 22 of fibre-board, Which serve as protectors to the body against breakage or other injury. as Well as electrical insulators, and through which the cords 14 are extended.
The one end of the chamber is preferably closed, as by the stopper Q3, and the other end closed, when in use by the iron, or core, not shown, upon Which the hair is Wrapped.
The form of the device illustrated and described herein is submitted in accordance with statutory requirements by Way of cxhibiting one form of embodiment of my invention. Various changes, alterations. or modifications of the structure may be made Without departure from my invention as defined in the following claim.
I claim A device of the class described comprising a metallic tubiform heating chamber, an incombustible covering therefor comprising relatively cemented layers of sheet asbestos, a layer of cement, a resistance Winding embedded in said cement, an incombustible coverng composed of relatively adhesvel secured layers of sheet asbestos, a second layer of cement, a second resistance Winding embedded therein, an ncombustble covering of sheet asbestos 'for the second Winding, a heat insulating body of Sheet cork covering the last mentioned ncombustble covering and a superficial covering of felt cloth, discs of noombustlble and heat lnsulatlng materlal Covering the ends of said Winding and coverings l0 GEORGE W.
