Hihis invention relates to collapsible or foldinguinbrellas and the like, and particularly to the class wherein a telescoping handle serves as a nucleus for a plurality of divergent and extensible folding members which togethermay constitute a casing for the whole device in collapsed condition.
The main object of my inventionis to provide an umbrella in such a completely collapsi'le form that 1t :15 condensed to a convenient and small package which may readily be carried in the pocket. Another Qb ect 1s to'produce such an umbrella whichisof normal size andfully useful as ordinary equipment, and which is both re'asonablein cost, aswell as durable and practical in construction.
. Further ob'ects and the variouseconomies and advantages attained by my invention will appear hereinafter, as. the specification proceeds. i
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1, is a perspective view of an umbrella embody- Lag my invention, and shown in completely closed condition. V
2 is a vertical section of the samede: vice in partly open condition, only one rib structure being shown at each side for clarity in illustration. i
F 1g. 3 1s a similar v ewwlththe device opened to its full extent.
Fig. l-is atop view of the devicewhen partly opened as in Fig...2, andthe top plate removed to reveal certain structural details and. the fabricor flexlble cover merely indicated by dotted lines.
Throughout the views, the same reference numerals indicate the same, or duplicate parts. i p
lnthe practice of my invention, a bottom plate 1 is mounted upon a tubular member 31 which is closed at thetop by an imperferate plate 2. The plate 1 is slidable on tube 31, and is 1 retained on the same by a collar 6, while in raised position, a spring 26, also mountedon the tube will tend to return the same to collar 6. lntermedlately on the tube, a plu rality ofbearings or arm pivots similar to 1.5 surround the tube, while corresponding,
. upperbearings 15 and lower bearings 14, a
plurality of extensible lazy tong arms 10, 10 are mounted, in such a manner that, when plate is forced upward on the tube, these members will-tend to extend outwardly in diverging fashion from the tube. 9 However, the outer edge of the plate 1 is also providedwith bearings 5, 5for a plu rality of outwardly folding diverging leaves 3, 3 which may be made in the form of channels partly enveloping slidably extensible members 11, 11. The outermost link 32 of each lazy tong arm is pivoted at 27 to respectiveslidable member 11, although thelink could be slidably adjustable therein up to a limit stop which would serve the same purpose-as the pivot in this case. i i
The leavesor channels 3, 3 have near their upperor outer extremities depressions 20, 20 to serve as a seat for a retaining ring 4.- to hold theparts closed. When it is desired to openthedevice the ring is forced down from the seatsin the leaves toward plate. 1, and therewill restidly in a final position on a plurality of reta'ininghooks 12, 12, 12, etc. below the pivot points of bearing 5, 5. The channelswill then tend to open as inFig. 2,
W n they may be drawn down to horizontal position to practically rest on ring 4:. The inner slidable member 11, 11 may then be extended until springstops 25, 25 snap down beyond the outer ends of channels 3, 3 while the lazy tong arms will simultaneously be extended to full length. A fabric 21,21 is secured beneath the cap plate 2 and at its edges to the eyes 19, 19, on the extremitiesof slidable members 11, 11 and as the arms and their parts are extended, the fabric will be end being" secured to the eyes 19, 19 of the u armsand the-innenend taken in in spring actuated slack take up reels 16, 16 mounted about tube 31 between the extensible arms. In this extended condition, a spring catch 24, forthe purpose provided, will snap beneath plate 1 to hold the device open.
I On the other hand the tube 31 contains a i pair of telescoping tubes 7 and 8 which may tremity thereof, and a plurality of bearings secured intermediately on said handle,a plurality of radially svvingable members"pivoted in said bearings and-in closed position 7 extending up to said cap plate and constitut- 'ing therewith a closed casing, means to extend said swingable' members, and a slidable ring mounted on said handle below said bear' ings and cap plate WhereWith to operate said Y means andthereby swingout or Withdraw said swingable' -members, there being a' fabric associated with said capplate and extending to the extremities of said swingable members;

rality of swing-able members pivoted-thereto;
each swingable member" being of such relative proportionsas to constitute a substantiallygiclesed casing for-the rest of the umbrella when 'allare retracted closed positionya cap plate associated withsaidhandle, for clos ing'tli'e' upper end of said casing, a retaining member surrounding said svvingable members in order to hold'thein closed as an assembled" casing, and meanson said ring to retain said a retaining member when displaced from said swingable members in'op'en position thereof, therebeing a fabric associated with said swingable members.
93. A collapsible "umbrella includingthe i combination, with a handle provided with a cap platethereon, of a plurality of radially swingableineinbers, 'aslidable ring having a plurality of bearings which said members;
I are pivoted and further provided with radial there tang a fabric associated with said members :to' constitutean umbrella top. I

I-Iaving now fully described my invention,
l. A collapsible umbrella structure including a handle in combination Witha plurality of bearings arranged around the same and provided with a plurality, of swingable' members pivoted thereto, a displaceable re-l tainingmeinber normally surrounding said swi igable members When'the same are in closed position, and means to catch and retain said retaining member when displaced from said swingable members in open position thereof, there being a flexible cover for said umbrella structure associated with said I swingablemembers. v c
5'. In a collapsible umbrella including a handle having a plurality of divergently extensible members associated therewith, a lazy tong structure associatedwith each extensible member for extending and supporting the same, there being a fabric connected to said handle and the outer extremity of each of said extensible members, and a connecting cord attached beneathsaidfabric to each of said outer 'extremitie's of said extensible members and passingover-the corresponding lazy tong structure toward said handle in order to sup-' port and protect said fabric; a'cordreel as 'scciated with said handle adjacent each lazy I I tong. structure to receive the corresponding connecting eord and take up the slack there of so as to-provide ageneral tension thereof in cpen and partly open positions ofsaid unibrellai 7 5 6*.
