ELEVATED BATH SUPPORT FOR INFANTS Filed 001?. 24, 1929 'fia'fl/f A P m INVENTOR AT EY Patented June 24, 1930 FRANK A. BUMER, OF PORTLAND, OREGON ELEVATED BATE SUPPORT FOR INFANTS Application filed October 24 1929. Serial. No, 402,179.
UNITED STATES PATEN'IIL OFFICE v My invention is intended to be used in conjunction with a bath tub to elevate the infant during bathing in order that the mother or nurse may stand in a normal position while giving the bath.
The same is adapted for being supported upon a bath tub in order that the water may drain through into the tub, thereby eliminating the stooping of the mother, or nurse, dur-' ing the bathing operation and eliminating the hazard of dropping the child during the bath within the tub.
The invention consists primarily of a fabricated frame having leg e ements hingedly secured thereto and having a support for the child removably positioned "within the frame and having draining holes disposed within the supporting element- Means are provided for stiffening the legs relative to the body and for folding the same when not in use.
The primary purpose of my invention is to facilitate the bathing of infants and small children by the mother, or the nurse, by permitting the attendant tostandin a normal,
- erect position while administering the bath.
A further object of my invention consists in providing simple means for elevating the infant during the bathin operation .and for maintaining the infant co and clear from so the bath water to eliminate the hazard of water suffocation and to eliminate the hazard of dropping the child within the tub during the bathing operation.
A further object of my invention consists in providing a structure that may be folded, when not in use, to occupy a minimum of space.
A still further object of my invention consists in providing simple and eflicient means that may be used in conjunction with bath tubs now in common use and for maintaining the. infant at an elevated position during the bathing operation.
With these and incidental objects in view,
the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in the appended claims, and a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter shown with reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specificatlon.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, of my device and of a bath tub and illustrating the device in 55 position uponthe tub. Fig. 2 i s a perspective, end View, partially 1n section, of theassembled device.
Fig; 3 is a side viewof the assembled device shown folded. 69 Fig. 4 is a fragmentary, sectional, side view vof the frame and the leg supports secured thereto and in normal position" for use. v
' Fig. 51s a fragmentary, sectional, side view of the mechanism as illustrated in Fig. 4 but 5 illustrating the leg in folded position.
Like reference characters. refer to like parts throughout the several views.
I preferably form my device of an endless rim 1 having downwardly extending corner posts 2, one each disposed at each corner of the rim 1.- Stitfener supports 3 are disposed at the oppositely disposed end of the assembly and are secured to the posts. Central. straps 4 and 5 downwardly extend from the rim and a support 6 connects the straps. The alignment of the elements 3 and 6 are symmetrical so that a supporting hammock 7 extends therebetween. 1 preferably form the supporting hammock 7 of. a metal plate havo ing drain holes 8 disposed therein and in spaced relationship with eachother. The end posts 2 are relatively short and are hollow. The legs 10 are slidably disposed within each post and are journaled relative thereto about an outwardly extending pin 11. The pin 11 is slidably positioned within a slot 12 disposed within one of the side walls of the leg to limit the movement of the leg and the stub shaft 9 relative to the end post. The lower end of each of the legs has a contour 13 that is adapted to engage and rest upon the upper surface-14 of the bathtub. Side graces 15 and 16 are disposed at the opposite- 1y disposed side of the assembly and, are hingedly secured thereto relative to' the straps 4 and 5. Receiving holes 17 aredisposed within the legs and the braces 15 and'16 have right angle bends 18 disposed at their outer ends. The bent portions are adapted to engage within the holes 17 disposed within the legs. the rim, foldable legs associated with the posts The purpose of the braces is to brace the erectand hinging means for locking thelegs in suped assembly longitudinall When the device porting position.
is erected for use, the in ant is placed upon the hammock 7 and the bath may be adminis- FRANK A. RUMER.
tered to the infant thereupon.
When it isdesired to fold the assembly for i placing away and out of use, the braces are disengaged from the holes disposed within the l m legs, the legs are pulled downward and when k the articulating points disposed about the pins 11 reach a precise position, the legs may then be moved horizontally and within the locator slot 19 disposed within the lower end 15 of the end posts 2 and be brought within close proximity to the frame. Each of the legs are adapted to being folded longitudinally as illustrated in Fig. 3 in which position the assembly may be placed out of position 20 and out of use. The hammock assembly? is removably disposed within the frame and rests upon the bars 3 and 6. 7
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill 25 the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the in- I I vention to the one form of embodiment herein shown and described, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming so within the scope of the claims which follow.
What I claim is: 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of an endless rim, tubular posts downwardly extending from the rim, straps 35 downwardly extending from opposite sides m0 of the rim and substantially central of the sides, stifl'ener supports disposed laterally of the rim and in spaced relation with the endless rim, a supporting hammock removably 40 disposed upon the stiffener supports, folding m5 legs associated with the corner posts, said legs having their outer ends formed to engage the upper rim surface of a bath tub and side braces hingedly secured to the central straps 5 and adapted for engagement and disengage- ,7 1
ment with the folding legs. r
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rim, tubular posts down- I wardly extending from; each corner of the 1 m rim, stub shafts slidably disposed within each of the tubular posts, a slot disposed within the side wall of each of the posts in which a pin disposed within the stub shafts slides to limit the movement ofthe, stub shaft relative to the 5 post, a supporting leg hinigidly secured to I v 129 each stub shaft, means for ing each leg in erected position and a perforated hammock removablydisposed within the assembly and in spaced relation with the 00 nm. v
3. In a device of the class described, the 1 4 combination of a rim, posts disposed at elther gcornerof the rim and downwardly extendin therefrom, a perforated metallic hammocfi u removably supported in spaced relation with' 13o edly maintain- 4 I
