' CAR COUPLER Original Filed April 3, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTORNEY WITNESS:
1 be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in 20 Patented June 3, 1930 "ADAM WAKENSHAW, or enaac nnx,
' CAR cou'rriniiaf M NTAN Application filed Apr1f13, 1928, Serial No.2e7,o3e;= Renewed October so, 1929;
a This invention relates to improvements in .j
car-couplings and the general object is to provide a car-coupling that is automaticin its coupling actionbut must be manually operated to movethe partsto releasing position, with the result cars are coupled thereby in a secure manner without'attention, andfregard less of the shock, jars or inclination of the travel of the cars, they cannot become casually uncoupled." 2 Y 1 A further object of theinvention is to pro vide a car couplingthatcan be applied to any car, is strong and sturdy, simple in'construction, inexpensive to manufacture and elficient in operation andservicee This inventionalso consists in certain otherfeatures ofconstruction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts,to
the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my inventionin detail, ref-, erence will be ingsvwherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and inwhich: 1
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of my coupling to-mi'ning cars with the coupling in operative position and connecting'two cars'together. V
VFIQUIG 2 1s a rear elevation ofa car showing i my coupling applied thereto.
I Figure 3 is a The bore is provided withinwardly inclined side walls and bottom wall. The top wall of the draw-head has a portion thereof ar- [24 0f the drawings,

Figure 14.. ,Thei operating=j member; includes a sub- 1. stantially U-shaped intermediate portion 13 which has .secur'ed ther had to the accompanying drawperspective view showing the coupling in'position for receiving the coupx i anglebent-endsto provide-handles15.,;.

T-heia rm- '6 hasa recess;9, f orn ne d in its freevild and is adapted Which holds the member in n operativeor the latch arm' '10 coupling positionaslclearlyzshownin Figure 1.;1 E l e latch arm 10 is'pivotallysecuredfor and is provided 7 and; formtide -with thearmsof theUeshaped 7' portion are outwardly, extending oppositely disposejdflshanksj1twhich te fminatein rightv receivefa :latch member;-17--- to prevent 'move mentzlofzthe;.operating memberto'itsoperat- V ing position as shown in Figure 4. surface so that the latch member 17 will pass over the projection when the operating member gravitates to its inoperative position as shown in Figure 2, and when in this position the projection will prevent movement thereof as previously referred to.
The operating member is supported by strap hangers l8 secured to blocks 19 ar-, ranged on the end of the car as best shown in Figure 3, and one of these strap hangers is formed with a slot 20 through which ex- 7 tends a finger 21. The finger 21 isformed with one of the shanks and may be used for moving the operating member as will be apparent. i a v V .Bising from and formed .With'the drawhead centrally of the top thereof is an apertured ear 22 which is adapted to receive a drivers hitch whereby the cars maybe 'proplace to place by animals and pelled from when itis desired to make-up large trains.
From the above description and disclosure of the drawings, it will be obvious'that I have provided a car coupling that is automatic in its action for coupling-cars and due to the latching means {or the coupling operated member, it will be obvious that the coupling cannot become casually uncoupled regardless f of the road bed of the cars. One of my novel coupling members is adapted to be arranged onone'endof a car while the opposite end is provided'with the usual draw-head and coup-ling link, and when a companion car with itsrcoupli-ng link end is disposed so that the link will engage the arm 6, it will move the-arm 6 to its horizontal position asshown in Figure 1 and cause the latch arm 10 to be arranged in the recess 9 of said arm 6 and :moveinent of the opera-ting member will be necessary in order to move the latch arm 10 out of the recess. r It isthough-tfrom the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of invention will be readily apparent;
5 I-d esire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several 1 partsyprovided that such changes fall within the scope 01": the appended claim. \VhatI c laimis:
