Description
March 25,1930. w. MACOMBER POULTRY COOP OR CRATEL Filed Dec. 31, 1928 INVENTOR Z fl/i W/Vammief BY 74mm ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 25, 1930 .UNITED STATES PATENT? OFFICE LYNN W. MAGOMBER, OF
BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T UNITED STEEL AND WIRE COMPANY, OF BATTLE CREEK,
MICHIGAN POULTRY COOP OR CRATE Application filed December 31, 1928. Serial No. 329,434.
The main object of this invention is to provide in a poultry coop or crate an improved door structure which may be easily opened and closed manually and at the same time is securely retained in closed position, and remains in open position without special latching means or adjustment.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a poultry coop of the battery type embodying the features of my invention, one of the doors being shown in closed position and another in open position.
of one of the wall panels showing the doors in partially open position.
The embodiment of my invention illus trated comprises bottom horizontal frame members 1 and corner uprights 2, these parts being shown in conventional form.
Only one wall panel is illustrated, which consists of top and bottom longitudinal bars 3 and 4 and vertical slats 5, the slats being formed of wire and the bottom bars of heavy wire or light rods. Certain of the vertical slats are spaced to provide door openings 6.
Intermediate longitudinal bars 7 and 8 are provided in the structure illustrated. The door retaining rods 9 are arranged across the top of the door opening and have upward cam offsets therein providing keepers 10. The door is formed of sections designated by the numerals 11 and 12, the section 11 being made up of vertical slats and top and bottom members 13 and 14:. The front section 12 is made up of vertical slats and top and bottom members 15 and 16. The rear ends of the top and bottom members 14. of the section 11 are provided with eyes 17 which are engaged with the vertical panel slat 18. The section 12 is provided with eyes 19 and 20 which are engaged with the vertical slat 21 Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the rear door section 11. The lower eye 17 rests upon the rod 4:.
The front slat 22 of the section 12 is provided with an elongated eye 23 engaging the retaining rod 9 and with an eye 2 1 at its lower end engaging the longitudinal bar 4 of the panel.
hen the door is closed the eye 23 engages the keeper 10 as shown in Fig. 1, the door yielding or springing to permit this engagement and the eye springing down into engagement therewith, thereby effectively retaining the door in closed position. At the same time a rearward push on the front section of the door will cause the eye to spring over the keeper so that the door may be opened by continued pressure in one direction.
The upper ends of the inner slats of the door sections are extended upwardly above the top members of the door providing stops 25 which engage with the rod 9, preventing the door being opened by pressure from the inside of the crate. lNhen the door is opened it is entirely out of the way, collapsing within the crate, and it is not likely to be accidentally closed. It can, however, be quickly closed merely by pushing forward on the front section until the eye 23 engages the keeper 10. The door is automatically locked in its closed position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a wall panel comprising top and bottom longitudinal bars and vertical slats disposed to provide a door opening, a door retaining rod having a cam offsetthcrein disposed horizontally across the upper portion of the door opening below the top longitudinal bar of the panel, and a door comprising pivotally connected sections each consisting of top and bottom members and vertical slats, the top and bottom members of slat of the rear section, the front slat of the with the outer vertical front section having a loop at its lower end slidably engaging the bot-tom longitudinal bar, and a loop at its upper end slidably engaging said door retaining rod and adapted to engage said cam ofiset therein when the door is closed.
2. The combination of a wall panel provided with a door opening, a door retaining rod having a cam offset therein disposed horizontally across the upper portion of the door opening, and a door comprising pivotally connected sections each consisting of top and bottom members and vertical slats, the top and bottom members of the rear section terminating in eyes pivotally engaged with the vertical panel slat at one side ofthe door opening the top and bottom members of the front section terminating in, eyes pivotally engaged with the outer vertical slat of the rear section, the front slat of the front section having a loop at its upper end slidably engaging said door retaining rod and adapted to engage said cam offset therein when the door is closed.
3. Thecombination of a wall panel provided with a door opening, a rod disposed horizontally across said door opening and having an offset therein providing a keeper, and a door comprising pivotally connected sections, the outer section being slidably mounted and slidably engaged with said retaining rod to coact withsaid keeper thereof when the door is in closed position, the sections of said door being formedvof wire'and springingto permit the engagement and disengagement of said keeper,
4. The combination of a wall panel provided with a door opening, a rod disposed horizontally across said door opening and having an o'JTset therein providing a keeper,
I and a door comprising pivotally connected sections, the outer section being slidably engaged with said retaining rod to coact with 7 said keeper thereof when the door'is in closed position.
5. The combination of a wall panel provided with a door opening, a rod disposed horizontally across said door opening and having an offset therein providing a keeper,
and a door comprising --'pivotally connected sections, the outer section being slidably mounted and slidably engaged with said retaining rod to coact with said keeper thereof when the door is in closed position, said door sections being provided with stops coacting with said retaining rod when the door is in closed position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
