NEW JERSEY PUMP Application filed September 21, 1927. Serial No. 220,875.
This invention relates to improvements in pumps. j
One of the objects of my invention is in a centrifugal pump to enable the application of 5 primary power and to provide between the axis of the device and the point of the application of the power a leverage equal to the length of the radius of the pump casing.
Another object of the invention is in a de- 10 vice of the character specified to avoid the use of centrally located shafts for the application of power which increases the power necessary to rotate the device.
Still another object of the invention is to utilize the combined action of centrifugal force due to the rotation of a casing in combination with impelling means for rotating the hydraulic medium in the opposite direction to increase the lifting action of the centrifugal force applied to the casing and thus cause it to rise more rapidly in the pipes carried thereby.
' Still another object of this invention is to provide means for guiding and enclosing or confining particles of the hydraulic medium acted upon by centrifugal action due to rotation'of a casing and'I preferably provide around the edge of a rotating casing which dips into the hydraulic medium a series of pipes of sufiicient diameter to enclose and guide the major portion of the particles of water which the rotation of the casing atv a given speed is capable of elevating and such particles of water within the pipes are thus, instead of being loosely raised within a large casing, confined and subjected to centrifugal pressure due to rotation of the casing and a particle will have a planetary motion in the pipes because it will tend to rotate about the center of rotationof the casing, the force be-' ing continuously applied to the particles in each of the confined columns of water in the pipes, and will also tend to rotate about the axis of the pipe or column of water, so that any such particle will be caused to be elevated more rapidly than water which is unconfined. I also preferably arrange these pipes in inclined position in relation to the vertical axisof the device so as to facilitate the guiding of the confined water or other liquid medium. 1
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so combined as to co-act and cooperate with each other in the performance of the functions and the accomplishment of the results herein contemplated, and comprises in one'of its adapta tions the species or preferred form illustrated in the-accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view in vertical section substantially through the axis of the device showing a preferred embodiment of my invention; and
' Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to these drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invent1on,C is a 00111031 casing open at its lower ends aIldCllVlded. into anupper section 1 and intermediate section 2 and lower section 3,"
and terminating at their upper open ends 0 within the intermediate compartment 2 so as to discharge any water passing through such pipes thereinto. These pipes 4 are preferably arranged in a position inclined in relation .to the vertical axis of the device, the incline being disposedin the direction of rotation thereof, so that when the casing is rotated centrifugal action will cause water to rise within the pipes 4 and be discharged within the intermediate section 2, from which such water is again elevated by the centrifugal action of the casing through the pipes 5 and discharged into the gutter 6 from which it is carried through a suitable channel 7.
In order to procure the most efficient operation of centrifugal force, the casing C is rotated at a high rate of speed, and in accord ance with my invention I am enabled to rotatethis casing with a minimum of power. Obviously if power is applied at the center i or axis we would be unable to obtain the bene- V fit of any leverage in'the application of'such power While if primary power be applied to the outer perimeter of the casing W1th theaxis acting as the pivot, we are enabled to procure therbenefit of the leverage between the point of. application on theoutside and the axis and in order so to take advantage of this x l e I apply my Primary p re s -10 force atthe outeredgeor periphery of the casing and" preferably utilize, for the purpose, an air propeller 10 mounted upon a bracket 11 at the top of the casing, and the casing is preferably supportedby a frame F;
reinforced by struts S and provided with a track bar T which cooperates witha track bar T on the casing and betweenwhich track bars I insert a'plurality of ballssoas- ,to produce asball bearing support for theupper end. ofthecasing. The lower end of the Cas -=7 ing is steadied and partially supported by 'theuse ofan. annular trackbar T on the casing, which 1S pIOV1Cl 6Cl with a flange t adapted to'enter or fit between grooves g in rollers B supportedin bearings B which arev in turn mounted on brackets B attached to i the frame members F. Current is supplied to. members 10 mounted adjacent to' the air propellers: by any suitable means, and as shown, the current is carried through the leads Le to brushes I) which engage'rails 1", carried in a channel bar C. mounted on the casing, leads L? being taken-off from. these caslngigif 7 h t a Itwill be understood that the elevation of tion of, forcesf utilized in the intermediate tank, namely, the centrifugal force, due to I brushes to .thefmotor and ithusproviding 35 leads which rotate withithecasing and imo tor. In opei'at-ionlthe motor is startedinfany suitableumanneri which causes the air pr opel lers to rotate andmove in a circular path through the air, acting,fas aforesaid, through aleverage which equal'to the radiusofl'the water is greatly assisted-by the combinathe rotation of'the casing and the'ino've ment in theilopposite direction-of the mediumfby aniimpeller I or other suitable mechanism. The impeller I is a conventional w'ater;im-. pelling device such as heretofore commonly used and described under the name 'impellet in various standard text books- The function of the impeller I is to impart an impelling force to the body of waterin the (intermediate tank giving it centrifugal motiomin such an upward direction that will impel "the water into the pipes and thus lass'ist in raising the liquid in said pipes. This i s accomplished by continually sending'a high crestwave toward the mouths of. the pipes whichpractically rams the water inside them force.i.- l I for 'rotation. having: an open .endfdipping Having described my finvention, I 01 m 1.
