This invention relates to indicating devices of the general character of those shown the operationof the pump. It is particularly concerned with the sounding of an audible w signal for eachdelivery of a unit volume of the gasoline or other liquid i 1 In theoperation of such indicators it has been found that the striker or hammer which is intended to sound anaudible signal on the '5 delivery by the pump of a unit volume of liquid and is operated by a cam which moves,
in consonance with the pointer might fail of operation if the movement of the pump should be stopped when the pointer appears e to have reached the limit of unitary movement but before the cam has reached a posi tion which will permit the hammer to drop, or otherwise as determined by the initial setting. Not only would there be no sound- 5 ing of the audible signal in such a contingency, but the signal would be sounded when the movement of the cam is resumed" at the next operation and a full revolution of the cam would be necessary to pick up the harm mer again. In this manner the audible signal might be sounded at the wrong time or fail to be sounded at the proper time. Moreover the hammer might not be picked up by the cam for a succeeding operation without :m the return of the operating device to a position which might be impossible. These difiiculties are overcome by mounting the operating cam freely on the actuating shaft, connecting it therewith for operation through a 40 pawl and ratchet, and forming the cam so that when the point of release of the ham mer is reached, or otherwise as determined by the initial setting, slightly in advance'of the pointer, the cam will be driven ahead by l the coaction of the spring pressed hammer arm. Thereby the audible signal is sounded slightly in advance of thefull movement of the pointer and the cam itself is moved'beyond the striking point and is in readiness to be picked up by the pawl in its first succeeding revolution. 7
The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which it is illustrated and in which:

In the embodiment of theinvention illustrated inthe drawings, the several working parts including thedial a, the pointer a ,and 7 the pointer supporting shaft a are supported by a suitable metal frame. The indicatin g devices are actuated, in the operation of the pump,-through a lever 0, shown in Figure 1, in operative engagement with a moving part of the pump ,mechanism, not necessary to be shown, preferably the shaft or gear by which the rack bar of the pump is actuated, the lever 0 being secured to the shaft 0 which carries a'pinion 0' in engage- S0 ment with a gear 0 The latter is operatively associated through a friction device, with a pinion 0 which meshes with the internal gear segment cl. The latter, through operative connect-ions such as are described in said Patent No. 1,531,823, and not necessary to be described herein, actu'ates the pointer a the pointer being driven in a forward direction during the delivery recipro cation of the pump and the segment and beon ing left at rest during the return reoipro cation of the pump and segment. It will be understood that the forward movement of the pointer a being directly effected by the pump actuated devices 0, 0 0 (Z, etc., is proportioned to the number of operations of the pump and for each reciprooa- 10% tion of the pump is advanced over one unit of the dial. It is desirable to cause the forward movement ofthe indicating devices to ,effect the sounding of an audible signal as the pointer reaches each unit mark on the dial.
I This might be effected by the cooperation of a cam fast on its shaft and" driven with the pump actuated indicating mechanism and a spring actuated hammer for a gong. should happen that the movement of the pointer is stopped before it reaches the position at which the cam referred, to, having a sharp drop, releases the hammer and permits it to strike the gong, no signal would be sounded at that time, but might be sounded at the very beginning of the next operation, to the confusion of the customer. To meet this difficulty the cam 17 which cooperates with the spring actuated hammer 22 to permit it to strike the gong 72 is mounted loosely on the sleeved shaft 9' of the usual gear 9?, which meshes with the pinion g which rotates with the pump actuated indicating mechanism. The gear g carries a pawl 1" which engages a single toothed ratchet wheel r formed with or on the hub of the cam 79 and the drop 19 of the cam is curved back somewhat, as shown in Figure 4, so that when the pointer a in its forward movement, approaches a. unit mark on the dial, the high point of the cam will have passed slightly beyond the. tail of the spring pressed hammer 79 thereby permitting the hammer to strike the gong under the influence of its ownspring. At the same time, the spring pressure of the hammer against the curved drop of the cam will drive the cam If it forward, Depending upon the initial; setting the striking of the gong takes place slightly but imperceptibly before the pointer reaches the exact unit position, but the signal will be sounded andthe cam will bein position to be picked up at the next rotation of the pump actuated; gear and placed in readiness to lift the hammer and release it at the next operation.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an indicator for oil pumps, etc., the combination of a pointer, pump actuated mechanism for moving the pointer forward, a gong, a spring pressed signal han'm'ier, a hammer operating cam, and operating means between the pump actuated mechanism and said cam including a ratchet and pawl connection, whereby said cam may have a n'iovement independent of the pump actuated mechanism.
2. In an indicator for oil pumps, etc., the combination with a pointer, pump actuated mechanism for moving the pointer forward, a cam operated with the pump actuated mechanism, said cam having its dropcurved'back and being loosely mounted, a ratchetand pawl connection between the cam and its operating part, and a spring pressed signal hammer for coaction with said cam.
