SWITCH MECHANISM.

The present invention, relating, as indicated, to switch mechanism, is more particularly directed to an improved type of quickopening switch for use in connection with elevator doors. It isdesirable to provide means in connection with elevator enclosure doors for breaking the operating circuit for the car as soon as the doors of the enclosure are, open and. for maintaining the circuit open as long as the doors are open. The present invention is directed to an improved type of switch for this purpose. To the. accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing Fig. 1 is a front elevation of an enclosure and door therefor, together with our improved switch mechanism; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the switch mechanism; Fig. 3 is a section on'the line 33, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4., Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the switch mechanism; and Fig. 6 is a 'side elevatou of the actuating means for the switch.
In Fig. 1 there is shown an elevator enclosure, provided with a door 2, locking member 3 and latch 4 therefor, and carriage 5, which slidably supports the door. Mounted above the door on the enclosure 1 is a switch mechanism enclosed in a casing 6.
The switch mechanism consists of contact elements 7 and 8, to which are respectively connected wires 9 and 10 which enter the interior of the casing 7 through openings 11 and 12 therein. These contact members 7 and 8 are adapted to be bridged and thus placed in electrical connection to close the operating circuit for the elevator car by means of a switch member 15 provided with a head portion 16 of sufiicient breadth to engage both of the elements 7 and 8 when the switch member is in the position shown in Fig. 2. The switch member 15 is of resilient metal and is secured to the bar 17 of fiber or other insulating material which is secured to a shaft 18. The bar 17 extends on the other side of the shaft 18, and this end 18 of the bar is weighted. sutlicicntly to normally raise the switch member into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. A buffer 20, of some soft yielding material, is mounted in the base of the casing 7 for cushioning the impact of the end 19 of the switch mem er when the latter is opened.
The shaft 18 extends through the side of the casing 6 where it carries a link 25 provided with a roller 26 on its lower end, this link being'fixed to the shaft, and turning with the. shaft.
Mounted on the top of the carriage 5 are two traekways, one of the trackways 30 beng inclined slightly to the horizontal durng the greater part of its lengtlnand having a terminal portion 31 which is horizontal. The second trackway 32 is pivotally connected to the first about a pin 33 as an axis, and in its normal position, which is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, is also horizontal.
The operation of the switch mechanism is as follows: The roller 26 normallv rests upon the fiat horizontal end 31 of the inclined trackway when the door is in the closed position shown in Fig. 1. As this door is moved to the left the carriage and trackway are similarly moved and the roller drops 011' from the end of the pivoted trackway 32, thus permitting the count-erweigh ted end of the member 17 to swing said incii'iber in a clockwise direction, lifting the switch element 16 out of contact with the two switch terminals 7 and 8, and in this way breaking the circuit for the car. Upon the return of the door to its closed position the roller 2U engages against the lower end of the inclined track 30 (see Fig. and is carried up on the inclined trackway to the upper flat portion 31. When the roller reaches this portion the shaft 18 has been rotated sufi'iciently to return the switch element 16 into contact with the members 7 and 8, closing the circuit. During the movement of the roller up the inclined surface 30, it engages beneath the upper trackway 32 and lifts this sufficiently to permit the roller 26 to continue up the inclined trackway, as shown in Fig. 6, until it reaches the flat portion which is beyond the end of the pivoted traekway so that the latter then drops back to its normal horizontal position.
