This v,invention relatesto door hinges ofA the ki d ivhich when the door is closed are conclea ed bctivfe'en the door and the doorpbstor body structure, sothat iii/addition to the usual sii/inging movements ofthe door it is necessaryi to provide for a transverse orpivot'al outward movement of the d'or hinge plateor part ofl the bhinge secured to thek door in opening it, and conversely for reverse l,or inward movement of the said part in closing the door.l These outward and inward movements of the door hinge plate have previously been ,obtained by rneans of parallel arms or links pivoted on the body, hinge plate en -operating with a spur on the door hinge plate, which spur in one construction worked against va cam surface on one ofthe said larms inthe out- Ward olxoij'ehne movement only According tothe present yinvention a cross link connects thev spur with andintei mediate part ot. the pivotedy armremote from the sp`u1,",in order toghold thespur in contaftwith the cam st irfaceA vonv the arm adjacenttothe spurso as to ensure positive aetionv of theV spur in both the opening and closing movements, and also in order to obtainA a ,half-lock action, thatl is to say, to cheek' slamming or violent opening land closingmo'vementsof the door b y proyiding for a 'slight stiffness in the Working of the hinge at one point in the opening or closing move` ment. The link may pass throughl an aperture in the arm comprising ,the'eam surface. .The body hinge plate'may be attached in a readily removable manner to a: lining or casing permanently vsecured inthe postor body, the attachment being made lby setvsc'rews, for example, this lining or `easing overlap-I ping the said hinge plate at both itstop and bottom edges. l l t Hinges of the kind to which this vinvention Arelates are especially applicable for use the doorsyof motor and other vehicles, but Iivish it torbe understood that refer` ences `,to fdoorsin'l this specification are also intended to inclu-,de similart `hinged ,closing members for vvhich`A a concealed hingeofthis kind suitable, forv example, safe doors, French v vindows, ships7` `po1'theles, sky-y lig-lits, piano lids,y cash-box lids and hinged closing members used for various purposes in engineering wherein` ordiiiarvy hinges might bev obstructive or otherwise ineicient or detrimental-ly affected by direct exn shown).
lposure, to heat or 'toy corrosivey liquids or gases.
` In order. that the 'said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into etl'ect, the same will now be described ymore fully withk reference to vthe accompanying drawings, "v,l1e'rein:--V Y, v Figure l is an elevation taken in the direction of the arronr/I'in Figure 3 representing a hinge embodying this invention in the open position. y y F igure'Q is an elevation taken in the direction ofthe arrowllin Figure Lrepresentingr` thefsaid hinge in its closed position.- Figure 3 isa plan of the ,hingen open.y t Figurel is a plan of thehinge closed; Figures 5 to v1l illustrate ,constructional details detached, Figures 5, 6 and@h being elevations ofthedoor late and the permanent anddetachable liody plates respectively, .While Figures 8, 9, 10 .and 1l `are plansof'the inner alan, vouter arm, spurliiik, and a connecting arm respectively. 'A `indicates a lining, :ca-sing,v socket,A or channelled plate, hereinaftercalledrthe lpermanentbody plate, which is intended to lbe fitted intoa recess in the door post or body pillar ofa vehicle, for example, with its flanges a', z2 k(see Figure 6) facing out- Wardlyfth'atqis, towards the door, the plate beingI secured by lfour long and strong? ,screwsl passing through the f countersunk holes a3 in these: flanges, and the said flanges being then desired filled, painted and vai'nished over toV match the remainder of the carriage body. In the front of the yper,- inanent body plateA are* threaded,holes-a4, a5 foithe reception of.v grub screws by `Which the 'detachable body hinge plate B can be t' secured inthe said permanent bod. plate. Projecting. from the permanent .bo yv plate are pins i6 Z(Figures 2 and 6) adapted to register in notches 7), (Figure 7 in the letachable body hinfre plate, Softhat in the event. et the dOQriH-e wlenchdbedsas in an accident, the said grub screws vwould break favvay,.,ir1 l preference tothose screws securing the permanent ,body plate Vto the door-post or` body, the,` screws the holes (if giving Way irst, .allo\vingvthe detachable bedr hing@ ,plate` ,B ,t0 ,tilt 0.1i. Pivot i 0,11. the eine at thus. tendnat@ ferent ,any SBI'IOUS damage to thebody o the Vehiclev (not l ln the channel or recess of the' plate are pivotally secured parallel arms C, D to the outer ends of which are pivoted connecting arms E, E', these. latter arms beingI in turn pivotally connected with the door plate F. This door plate is provided with countersunk holes through which can pass screws lor connecting it with the door (not shown), and from the inner part ot the said plate F projects a spur Gr adapted tov work in contact with the rounded outer tace d ot the arm D (see Figures 3 and 9). This spur G is biturcated as seen in Figures 2 and 5 to Lform jaws g', g2 in which is pivotally secured one end ot a link H (best seen in Figures 3 and 10), which link passes through a slot in the arm D and its other end is pivotally. connected with the arm C (see Figure 3).
ln order to etl'ect the desired. action in both the opening and closing movements, it is essential that the biurcated extremity of the spur Gr should move upon, and be held in constant Contact with the cam surface cl ot the arm D, and this positive action is ensured by the spur G being pivotally connected with the link H, which inturn is pivotally secured to thevarin C at such a point on the said arm C as willensure the pivot of the link'H remote from the arm C moving in an arc to conform exactly with that ot the cam surface. This balance and arrangement causes the spur G, link H, arm D, and cam surface CZ to work in perfect unison. rlhe positive action of the spur G upon the cam surface d through the interaction oit the link H and the arms E, E', also causes the arm C to move in unison with the arm D. lhen the opening movement has proceeded to the extent oi approximately degrees, this movement of the arm C under the combined pull of the arms E, E and the link -I, causes the butt end c of the arm C to bind against the inner tace of the plate B to a su'l'licient extent to oppose a slight resistance to the-further opening ot the door, the stiffness in the action of the hinge thus minin'iizing the risk of damage occurring by hasty opening of the door. In the :tully open position the buttends @2 ot the arms E, E lie snugly against the body hinge plate at each side of the spur (if. Conversely, near the beginning o'll the closing movement, the link H pushing the arni C causes the butt end c to bin-d against the inner face ot the plate lll and tends to prevent slamming of the door.
Vhat l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. ln a hinge oi the kind set forth, having a body hinge plate, two arms pivoted to said body hinge plate, one oit said arms comprising a cam surface, a door hinge plate, an arm on said 'door hinge plate pivotally connected at different parts of its length with both said arms `on said body hinge plate, and a spur on said door hinge plate adapted to work in contact with said cam surface, the combination therewith of means to hold said spur in contact with said cam surface during both the opening and closing movement-s.
2. ln a hinge of the kind set forth having a body hinge plate, two arms pivoted to said body hinge plate, a door hinge plate, an arm on said door hinge plate pivotally connected at di l'lerent parts ot' its length with both said arms on said body hinge plate, and a spur on said door hinge plate adapted to engage one of the said arms on said body hinge plate, the combination therewith of a link pivotally connected with said spur and. also pivotally connected with an intermediate part ot the pivoted arm on said body hinge plate remote trom said spur. 3. In a hinge ol the kind set lorth having a body hinge plate, two arms pivote-d to said body/ hinge plate, one of said arms comprising a cam surface, a door hinge plate, an arm on said door hinge plate pivotally connected at dilerent parts of its length with both said arms on saidbody hinge plate, and
a spur on said doorhinge plate adapted to engage the said cam surface, the combination therewith of a link pivotally connected with. said spur and also pivotally connected with an intermediate part of the pivoted arm on said body hinge plate remote from said spur to hold said spur in contact with sai-d cam surfaceI during both opening and closing movements. v
4. In a hinge of the kind set forth having a body hinge plate, a door hinge plate, a plurality ot arms pivoted to said body hinge plate, an arm on said door hinge plate pivotally connected at different parts of its length with the outer end of each of said arms on the body hinge plate, and a. spur on said door hinge plate adapted to engage'one ot said arms on said body hinge plate, the combination therewith of a link connecting said spur with an intermediate part of the arm '1 on the body hinge plate remote from said spur, said link and itsy connections being adapted to co-operate with said arm on the door hinge plateto cause stiffness at certain points in the opening and closin movements.` 5. In a hinge of the kind set fortlnfhaving a body hinge plate, a door hinge plate, a plurality of arms pivoted on said body hinge plate, a plurality ot' arms on said door hinge plate connected by a pivot pin with one of said arms on said body hinge plate, and a spur on the door hinge plate adapted to engage the last named'arin, the combination therewith ot a link pivotallyconnected with sai-d spur and with one ot said arms on said body hinge plate and adapted to engage said pivot pin at the fully open position to act as y a stop to prevent :turthei1 opening.
