The gist of the invention lies. in the provision of a series of openings or slots formed in the striking surface of the anvil which is tubular in cross section, the type, bars being adapted to strike the anvil between the slots which interrupt and break up the sound waves resulting from the type bar blows.
To the above ends, the invention consists in the featuresof construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinai'ter described and particularly pointed outin the claims. In' the accompanying drawings which illustrate three different forms of the invention,

In this construction, the anvil 23 is provided with a series of parallel slots 24 in place of the radially disposed slots of the Figs. 1-4 construction. These parallel slots when the anvil is in place in the-machine. The type bars, particularly those near the ends of the set, strike crosswise of the slots but as will be plain from a consideration of Fig. 7 said bars always contact with the solid portlon of the anvil as at 25, this numbeti; indiars. What I claimas new and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is:'- v

2. The combination of a platen, a pluralityx of type bars, and a metal anvil with w ich said type bars cooperate, saidanvil being circular in cross section and formed with transverse kerfs'.
3. The combination of a platen, a pluralityl of type bars, and a metal anvil with w ich said type bars cooperate, said anvil being circular in cross section and formed with transverse kerfs, the number of said kerfs corresponding substantially with the number of ty bars.
4. The com ination of aplaten, a type bar support, type'bars mounted thereon, and an anvil seated in a depression in said sup rt and provided with a series of slots exten ing crosswise of the anvil.
