EDWARD KENER, JR., OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
PATENT OFFICE.
VALVE.
Application filed April 2, 1926. Serial No. 99,389.
This invention relates to a valve, and is more particularly intended to be used for controlling the fiow of fuel gas in an incinerator. In the form of incinerators in which S this valve is intended to be used, the same fuel gas when the pile of refuse in the incinerator is completely consumed.
It has been found that where a regulatmg gas valve was provided in an incinerator,
there was a tendency on the part of the op-l erator to turn the gas down, and operate the incinerator with an insufficient supply of gas especially when the operator was leaving the house lor a length of time. While a complete reduction oll the refuse was et'r'ected, this operation resulted in an incomplete combustion of the refuse and the consequent production ot obnoxious unconsumed gases and fumes which were carried to the eXterior of the building and produced avdisagreeable odor around the same.
The principal object of this invention therefore is to provide al valve which is either completely open or completely closed, and which when completely opened is locked in such position until tripped automatically or by hand.
Further objects are to provide such a valve which is simple and inexpensive in operation and not' liable to get out of order through constant use.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the valve.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view showing the means 'for limiting the upward movement ot the locking bar.
Figure 4 is a front end view of the valve.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the same.
Similar' characters of reference indicate like parts in each -o the views.
, The valve housing is composed of two sections 6 and 7 which are joined by a screw connection 8. The rear section 7 is provided with an interior wall 9 forming an outlet chamber 10 in the rear ofthis section, and this wall is provided with an opening 11 around which is formed a forwardly 'facing conical valve seat 12. An outlet 13 is provided in rear of the wall 9 and is a'dapted to be attached to the pipe (not shown) lead ingto the gas burner, and a laterally projectlng inlet 14 is provided in 'li-ont of the wall 9 and is adapted to be secured to the gas manifold (not shown)` in any suitable manner.
A longitudinally movable plunger l5 is slidably` mounted in the front end of the front section and at its rear end is provided with a conical head 16 adapted to engage the` conical valve seat and cut off the'low of gas through the valve. The plunger is normally held in its. rearward or closed position by la return spring 17 surrounding the inner end of the plunger vand interposed between the housing and the head 16.
The plunger is drawn forwardlyby an upright operating lever 1S which is pivotally secured at its center to the outer-end of the plunger and at its lower end is pivotally secured to a forwardly projecting lug 19 formed integrally7 with theiront section 6 of the valve housing. The upper end of the operating lever is suitably shaped to provide a convenient handle for the operation of the valve and the lower end 2O is in the form of a blade which is received in longitudinal slots 21 and 2:2 provided in the outer end of the plunger and the lug 19, respectively, and held therein by transverse pivot pins 23 and Q4. The blade 2O of the operating lever is formed to permit the plunger to be drawn outwardly kand its lower rear edge 25 is curved and adapted to engage and bear against the bottom or rear end 26 of the slot- 22 when the lever is moved forwardly thereby relieving and preventing wear on the pivot pin Q4 when the valvey is being opened. yThe movement of the pivot pins 23A and 24 toward and from each other as the valve is closed and opened is permitted by providing a curved opening Q7 in the lower end ot the operating lever which is penetrated b v the pivot pin 24:y and thereby provides a sliding connection at this point. The opening is somewhat wider than the pivot pin therebyk permitting the rear edge of the blade 2O to freely engage the bottom 26 of the slot 22 and is curved to conform to the movement of the lower end of the blade relative to the pin 2li, thereby insuring free movement of the operating lever.
In order to lock the plunger when the same is drawn to its fully opened position, and hold the valve open until released automatically or manually, the plunger is provided wi th a recess 28 on its upper side which is arranged outside of the valve housing when the valve is fully opened and is adapted to receive the lower edge of the transverse locking bar 29.
The locking bar rests against the forwardly facing flat side 3() of t-he valve housing. and is pivotally secured at 31 to a lateral extension 3Q so as to be capable of swinging upwardly and downwardly. rlhe free or outer end of the locking bar extends across the upper side of the plunger, and in the closed or in ard position of the plunger rests on the upper side thereof. lVhen the plunger' is drawn outwardly to its fully opened position, the locking bar drops by gravity into the recess` 28 provided on the upper side of the plunger and prevents the valve from closing until the locking bar is tripped. In order to prevent undue wear of the plunger at the front corner of the recess 28, a hardened pin 36 is set into the plunger at this point as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
To prevent the locking bar 2f) from being raised further than is necessary to free the plunger, the saine is pivoted between an L- shaped support 33 and the extension 32, and the under side of the locking bar is recessed to form a catch or stop 34; which is adapted to en a corresponding stop face 35 on the support when the bar is aised and thereby limit the upward movement of the bar.
As a whole this valve is extremely simple and durable in construction and is not liable to get out of order or wear unduly through constant use; it operates reliably7 to perform the function set forth and is not liable to become accidentally tripped or released.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a valve, a valve mechanism having a longitudinally movable operating plunger, said plunger having a recess on its upper side, a locking bar pivotally mounted to one side of said plunger and extending transversely across the upper side thereof, the longitudinal edge of said locking bar beinr adapted to drop into engagement with said recess and hold said plunger in one position, and the outer end of .said locking har being formed to provide a handle whereby the locking ha lifted to release said plunger.
A valve comlirising a valve housing having a valve seat and an inlet and outlet arranged on opposite sides ot said seat, a longitudinally movable )pilunger mounted on ,said valve housing and adapted lo engage. said seat, a spring tending to hold .said plunger in engagement with said seat, .said plunger projectng outwardlyv from said casing and being provided on itsl upper side with a recess, and said casing being provided with an exterior transverse flat face adjacent said plunger, and a llat locking bar pivotally mounted on said face of the 'using to one side of said plunger and extending across the upper side thereof, .said locking bar being adapted to drop into said recess and hold said plunger in an outward position. and the outer end ol` said locking bar being formed to provide a handle whereby the locking bar lifted to rel ase said plunger.
il. A valve comprisingr a valve housing. a valve mechanism arranged in said housing and having a longitudinally movable actuating plunger projecting outwardly therefrom; means tending to hold said plunger in its inward position, means for drawingr said plunger outwardl)v comprising an operating lever pivoted centrally to the outer end of said plunger, and a lug projecting forwardly from the lower end of said housing, the lower end of said lever heilig slidnglv secured to said lug. and means for locking said plunger in its outward position comprising a locking bar pivoted to said housing to one side of said plunger and extending across the upper side of said plunger, said plunger being provided with a recess on its upper side into which said locking bar is adapted to drop when said plunger is in its outward pir sition.
In testimony whereof l hereby allix my signature.
