SHEET 0R GARD HOLDER.
Application filed November 27, 19%. Serial No. 151,093.
ll'lfy inllnovcd sheet or card visible index holder especially designed tor the holdinpv ot visible indexed sheets or cards and l have illustrated my :improvements as l have einbodied them for that purpose. My improvements are. however, well adapted 'for carrying` various kinds oil information. which it is desired to have displayed or rendered convenient tor reference.
My present improvements are in some respects an adaptation of and an improvement upon the structure shown in my application ttor Letters Patent tiled J une 19, 1926, Serial No. 117,072.
The main object o'lf' this invention is to provide an apparatus ot the class described which-is of very large capacity7 a consider- "ahlc number ot sheets or cards being effectively supported so that they are all conveniently accessible and so that they may be vconveniently Vshifted to a second holder or changed about as occasion requires.
Second. to provide an improved apparatus of the class described in which a sheet or series of sheets may be conveniently added or sheets removed, as occasion may require, o an entire sheet body shifted.
Objects pertaining.; to details and economies ot my invention will detinitely appear :from the detailed description to follow. The invention is clearly delined and pointed out in the claims.
.it structure embodying` the l'eatures ot my invention is clearly illustrated in the accouipanying,` drawing` 'torming` a part of this application, in which: i
F l is a perspective view of a binder ot the loose leaf type employing a plurality ot sheet-lilre supports or units embodying the tentures of my invention.

Fig. 11 is a fragmentary plan view ot a modified iorin of my invention in which a t ansfer member is employed .instead of directly shitting' into a second holder as shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. l2 is a detail section on line l2-l2 ot Fig. 2.
Fig. 13 is a detail perspective view of the follower.
Reterring to the drawing, l represents a loose sheet binder provided with binding or clanipirif;V bars 2. As the structural details ot the binder form no part oit the invention they are not illustrated therein. 'llhis binder as illustrated, however, contains a plurality of units designated generally by the numeral 3. Fach unit carries two sets or series ot sheet or card holders, that is, each faceo't each unit is adapted to receive a plurality ot holders.
lin the embodiment illustrated each unit comprises a plate-like body member having spaced pairs ot outer bars 5 secured on the sidesthereoit. These bars have rab beted inner edges 6 which coact with the plate fl providing groove-like ways facing towards each other. Between and in spaced relation to these bars 5 are mounted inner bars which are spaced to provide a forwardly lacing` groove-like guide way l2.
l provide a plurality ot holders 9 which have rearwardly oil'set ends l0 engageable with and slidable in the facing ways, these holders 9 also having rearwardly projecting luejs 'll which engage and slide in the torwardly facing grooves or ways l2 between the bars 7. rlhese holders are, in the embod @lll till
iment illustrated. `formed ot spring material so that they may be engaged and. disengaged by springing the same. The ways are also open at their ends so that the holders may be slid from the ends of the ways.
Each holder is provided with a sheet-attaching member 13 having oppositely projecting pintles ll engaging the eyes or knuckles l5 so that the attaching members are pivotally attached to the holders. rlhe attaching members have laterally projecting arms 16 provided with inturned hooks or lugs 17 at their ends with which holes 18 in the `sheets or cards 19 may be engaged, the attaching members being substantially as shown in my application for patent referred to.
At the ends of the ways I provide retaining members 20 which are also formed of spring nraterial and have rearwardly offset ends engageable with the facing ways, each of these retaining members also having rearwardly projecting pins 2l engageable with holes 22 in the bars 7, the resiliency of the member 2O retaining the pins normally in engagement while permittii-ig `their being disengaged by lifting up on the centra-l portion of the retainer.
I also provide a follower 23 formed of vspring material and having its ends 24 overlapping the edges of the bars 5 while the rearwardly offset tongues 25 engage under the vbars 5, thereby retaining the follower. The follower is of spring material and of such length that when sprung into engagement as shown in Fig. 2 sufficient friction results to held it in its adjusted position. With this arrangement the holders may be arranged on the supports in end to end relation, the attaching means being arranged so that there is no substantial overlapping oi the holders or their attaching means as is illustrated in Fig. 5, the sheets or cards lying substantially fla-t and `with 'the edge of each exposed `for identifying indicia.
Each support or unit is preferably provided with a pair of tonguesl 26 on its upper edge and holes 2,7 en its lower edge adapted 'to receive the tongues of a second unit or support, thereby facilitating the alining `of 'the ways of a pair of supports as is shown in 2.
Wfhen it is desired to shift the sheets or cards from `one support kto another., the second support is placed in receiving position as shown in Fig. 2, and the retaining member removed. The follower maybe removed intirely or shifted to the second holder. rlhe desired number oi sheets with their holder are then Ashifted to the second support. The follower in Fig. 2 is shown below the sheet body. lt will be understood that in supporting position it. would underlie the sheets and engage the bottom holder.
In the modification shown in Fig. 11, I provide a transfer member 28 which may be used to transfer the sheets from one support to another or for temporarily holding a group of sheets, the transfer member itself being used a. support. In this transfer member the ways are closed at the lower end and the upper end may be closed by a retaining member so that the transfer member can be handled without the holders 'falling out.
l have not attcniiited o illustrate or describe other embodiiuenta-i or iulai'itations, particularly in the form ot the ways or supports, as it is believed that the disclosure made will enable lthese skilled in the art to adapt the in'iprovenients as may be desired.
