Description
1927' J. B. ORMOND CdMB INATION DESK CALENDAR AND CARD INDEX TRAY 0R FILE Filed May 24, 1926 ISO Patented Sept. 6, 19278 1 UNITED [STATES JAMES BJORWMONDI, on FLAGSTAFF, AnizonAf COMBINATION DESK CALENDAR Ann CARD-INDEX TRAY on FILE.
Application filed May 24; 1926." Serial No. 111,357.
My invention relates to combination desk calendar and card index tray or file.
The primary object of my invention is'to provide a tray, the cover of which can be readily detached or moved to open or closed position and whichwhen open will be maintained in a vertical position at the back of the tray.
Another object is to provide the'cover with a hinged closing flap for closing the end of thetray. g,
Other and further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent as the specification is considered in connection'with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of the "tray showing the cover in open position; I
Figure 2 is a sectiontakenon'the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the tray with the cover in closed position;
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4'4 of Figure 3; g
Figure 5 is a plan View of the end closure member;
Figure 6 is an end view of the tray illustrating a modified form of end closure member; and A Figure 7 is a fragmentary view of the tray wall 4 showingthe slots 27 and; 36.
Referring more particularly to'the drawings wherein like reference numeralsr'eferto corresponding parts throughout the views; 1 denotes a rectangular tray compr'is-j ing side walls 2 front and rear end walls 3 and 4 respectively and a bottom 5. The rear wall 4 is formed at its upper edge with an inwardly and forwardly projecting flange 6 which rests upon and is suitably secured to partition 7, the latter being slightly spaced from the rear wall 4.
'Resting upon the ledges or raised portions 8 at each side of thebottom 5 are three sets of cards 17 arranged in the'order mentioned, first the daily calendar cards 9, the tabs 10 of which are numbered from 1 to 31 inclusive, second the monthly cards 11, the tabs 12 of which bear the months January to December inclusive and third the alphabetical cards 13, the tabs 14 of which bear the letters A to Z inclusive. These cards are supported in an inclined position against the usual follow block 15 mounted on the usual follow block rod 16, but this mechanism being of old and well known construction, further description is deemed unnecessary. Reference however is made to my Patent No. 1,541,173,. June 9,
1925, wherein this construction is illustrated described; is in closed or Figure 4 osttion When the topis inv closedpositionas best illustrated in Figures'4and 6 the Open-.
' mg 18 is closed by a closure flap 2 0, also about to be described. ,c
The tray top or coveris formed withde" pending side flanges 21, the ends of the top being open, that is, the flanges do not ex tend across theends. Projecting from the under face of the top or coveradjacen't the rear end thereof are a pair of headed studs 22 which travel in a pair ofcorrespondingly positioned vertical slots 23 formed in the rear end wall 4 .of the "tray, and a pair of short horizontally disposed slots 24fformed in the flange 6 of said rear end wall 4. The
top edge of the partitionZ, is notched orcut away as' at 25, thus forming in conju'n'c top orcover in a vertical open position (see Figure thereby permitting of the tray being handled or lifted from'plac'e to place without danger of displacing the top.
The flap or closure member- 20 hereinbe-. fore referred to is pivotally connected to or swung from the tray top 19 by means of a pair of hooks '28 engaging corresponding eyes 29 formed in an angle bar 40in turn secured to the under face of the tray top. This member 20 which is preferably made of sheet material, is made in the form of a pocket by bending the edges of the semi elliptical shaped back or body portion 30 first forwardly andthence inwardly thus providing what may be respectively termed a combined side and bottom wall 31 and a flange 32. The flange 32 being narrow and of uniform width as is true of the combined bottom andside walls 31, it follows that the front of the flap or closure member is substantially open, thus exposing the calendar pad 33 which the member 20 is adopted to hold. The flange 32 is of just suflicient width to prevent the pad 33 from falhngi out of the flap or closure member, thus providing for a maximum of exposure, and the width of the combined bottom and side Wall 31 is sufiicient to accommodate a calendar pad of approximately one hundred pages,
. thus covering a period of manyyears. Itwill also be noted that thecurvatu-re and dimensions of the flap. or closure 20 corresponds to the curvature and dimensions of the opening in the front wall 3. of the tray, to the endthat when the cover or. top 19 is moved to closed position the opening 18 will be completely filled or closed. During this. operation of closing the tray top, the flap 2U swings by gravity into normal vertical position wlthin the opening. The cover is then latched by means of the hook 34; and eye Assuming that thetray top is in closed.
osition and the user desires access to the interior thereof, it is merely necessary to slide the cover rearwardly until the studs 22 reach the rear of the short horizontally disposed slots 24 in flange 6, whereupon the cover is tilted to vertical position and permitted to drop until the centrally disposed headed stud 26 drops into the short vertical slot 27. It will be understood that during this latter movement the cover is guided by the studs 22 traveling in the long vertical slots 23 also that the heads of the studs prevent displacement of. the cover.
In closing the cover the reverse of the movement just described takes place. stud 26 is elevatedclear of the short slot 27, the flange 6 being cut away as at 36 adjacent the slot 27, to permit the head of the stud to pass. When the studs 22 have reached the top of the vertical slots 23, the cover is tilted downwardly and forwardly to horizontal position and at'the same time moved slightly forwardly until the ends of the flap is of solid construction and is adapted to contain a clock 37 comprising side, end and bottom wallsand a cover, the frontwall of the tray having an openingtherein to normally-render the cards in the tray-visible and accessible, a closure member for said opening carried by said cover adapted to automatically swing to a position substantially parallel to the cover when the cover is in full open vertical position, and adapted to automati cally swing to a position at right angles to said cover to close said opening when said cover is moved to full closed position.
3. A desk calendar and card index tray comprising side, end and bottom walls and a cover, said rear wall being provided with slots, headed studs on said cover adapted to engage in said slots and slidably and hingedly connect said cover to said tray.
4:. A desk tray, for'containing calendar and index cards, the'end of'said tray having an opening therein, a cover forsaid tray carrying a. closure for said opening, and means for slidably and pivotally connecting said cover to said tray whereby said cover may be moved to vertical posit-ion at the back of said tray, and a stud on said cover and a slot in the rear end. of said tray for maintaining said cover'in said vertical open position. j 1 5. A desk calendar and card index tray comprising side, end and bottom walls, the front wall of the tray having an opening therein to normally render the cards in the tray visible and accessible, a cover for said tray and means swung fromsaid cover for closing said opening when said cover is in closed position, said closure means being hollow and having an opening in its top and front face to respectively receive and eX- pose to View a calendar pad.
Intestimony whereof I ailix my sigaature.
JAMES B. ORMOND.
