JO' HN F. BITRICI-I, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MOLD.
Application filed September 29, 1924. Serial No. 740,665.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in concrete forms and more particularly to a form of this character used in the construction of chimneys and the like. The main object of my invention is the provision of a concrete form constructed of a plurality of parts which can be quickly and readily set up in position for pouring the plastic material into the mold and retaining the form in its proper shape until thoroughly hardened.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a-concrete form for the construction of chimneys and the like wherein the formation of the chimney is carried out in sections and suitable provision is made whereby the form may be raised for pouring the various sections of the chimney, being understood that a length of the chimney is first formed and then the concrete form raised to form another section of the ch-iin ney on top of the previously formed section. Another object of my invention is the provision of suitable means for bracing and strengthening the main body of theform, said means being adjustable whereby it may be quickly and readily actuated for the above purpose.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a concrete form constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view wlth parts removed and other parts illustrated in crosssection,
Fig. 4: is a vertical section on the line H of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In the construction of my invention I provide the body portion 1 of the mold of a plurality of arcuate-shaped sections the longitudinal edges of which are arranged in abutting relation as shown in Fig. 3 and T plates 2 are used for connecting the longitudinal edges of the section 3 with the cross.- portion of the T plates which are disposed upon opposite sides of meeting edges of the plate and are rivetedor otherwise secured thereto as illustrated in Fig. 1. A sufficient number of the plates 3 are provided sothat when they are arranged in abutting-relation as shown in Fig. 3 they will describe a circle which forms the outer wall of the concrete form. The inner wall t'comprises a plurality of arcuate-shaped plates 5 having upon their interior faces suitable bands 6, the ends of which are provided with outturned perforated lugs 7 which are bolted together as at 8. Any number of these connecting bands may be used and placed in any convenient position for holding the sections 5 together to form a circle of a smaller diameter than that formed by the outer wall to provide an annular chamber 9 between the inner and outer walls.
A set of the connecting bands 6 are preferably arranged at the upper ends of the sections 5 comprising the inner wall and these bands are provided with a plurality of notches 10 and in forming a concrete chimney or the like suitable reinforcing rods 11 are arranged within the chamber 9 circumferentially thereof and preferably spaced apart as shown in Fig. 3. These rods 11 are connected to the bands 6 at the upper edges of the sections 5 by having a wire 12 passed thru the notches and engaged around the rods 11 adjacent their upper ends as illustrated in Fig. 3 in order to retain the concrete form in its proper position to form the main body of the chimney so that it will rest upon the previously formed concrete base 13. In forming the base 13, the lower ends of the rods 11 are embedded therein so that after the form has been placed in position upon the base for pour ing a section of the chimney, the rods will be in proper position to hold the upper end of the form in place.
The cross-portion of the T at its upper end is bent transversely to form the-outstanding flanges 14 which are disposed in annular alignment with the out-turned flange 15 at the upper edge of each of the sections 3 to thus provide an annular flange which extends entirely around the upper edge of the outer wall of the form.
After the first section of the chimney has been poured and hardened so that the form can be moved, suitable means is provided whereby the form may be quickly and readily raised for pouring another section of the chimney.
The means for raising the form includes a circular outer ring 16 which is formed of a plurality of arcuate sections having perforations 17 formed in their ends to receive the bolts 18 which connect the ends of the sections to form a circle as shown in Fig. 2 and a second ring 19 is provided which is formed in the same manner as the ring 16 and arranged beneath these rings at predetermined points are the cross beams 20 carrying angular plates 21 the upstanding ends 22 of which engage the opposing faces of the rings 16 and 19 and are connected thereto by means of the bolts 23. The horizontal portions of the plates 21 are bolted to the ends of the cross-beams 20 by means of the bolts 24 to securely retain the crossbeams 20 and the rings 16 and 19 in their proper relative positions.
The central portion of the beams 20 have mounted thereon a sleeve 25 having an eye 26 which may be engaged by any suitable type of hoisting means for raising the form.
The main bod of the form which includes the outer and inner wall is connected to the rings 16 and 19 in the following manner. The outer Wall carries a plurality of plates 27 having tongues 28 which engage beneath the flanges 15 as illustrated in Fig. 5 and carry an upstanding perforated lug 29.
Engaged over the ring 16 are a plurality of U-shaped straps 30 the lower ends of which are bolted to the lugs 29 by means of bolts 31. From this it will be apparent that when the rings 16 and 19 are raised the outer wall of the main body of the form will be raised therewith.
The inner wall of the form is connected to the inner ring 19 thru the medium of the straps 32 which are engaged over. the ring19 and connected to the inner wall thru the medium of the hooks 33. From this it willbe apparent that when any suitable type of hoisting means is attached to the eye 26 of the beams 20, the beams 20 will be raised which in turn will raise the rings 16 and 19 and move the form upwardly to a position ready for pouring another section of the chimney.
The sections which form the outer wall of the form are suitably braced by means of the pivotally connected rods 34, the ends of which are extended thru suitable openings in the outstanding flanges of the T bars 2 and the outer ends thereof extends thru suitable loops 35 carried between the plates 36 which are riveted to the cross-portion of the T bars. Nuts 37 are threaded upon the outer ends of the rods 34 in order to adjust them to their proper positions for bracing and strengthening the outer wall of the form.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a comparatively simple concrete form which may be quickly and readily placed in position for pouring the plastic material in the chimney 9 and may be quickly and readilv raised as fast as each section of the chimney is poured and hardened to permit removal of the form.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention. it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described what I claim is:
1. A concrete form including spaced circular walls, an annular flange 'at the upper end of the outer wall, spaced'circular rings positioned above the upper ends of said walls, means connecting one of said rings with the flange on the outer wall, means connecting the inner ring with theinner wall and means positioned below said rings and engaging the hoisting power above said rings.
2. A concrete form including spaced circular walls, an annular flange at the upper end of the outer wall. spaced circular rings above the upper ends of said walls. U-shaped straps engaging over one of said rings and having connection with the flange on the outer wall, means connecting the inner ring with the inner wall and means my invention,
arranged below said rings and engaged by hoisting power to raise said rings and walls in a vertical plane.
3. A concrete form including spaced circular walls, means for retaining said Walls in upright spaced relation, an annular flange at the upper end of the outer wall, spaced rings arranged in circular relation at the upper ends of said walls, strap members carried by the outer ring, hook members carried by the lower end of said straps for engaging said flange, straps carried by the inner ring, means connecting the lower ends of the last mentioned straps with the inner wall and means connected with the rings whereby to raise and lower both the rings and walls.
4. A concrete form includin spaced circular walls, reinforcing rods between said walls, means forming connection between the inner Wall and rods to retain the form in an operative position, spaced circular rings above the upper ends of said Walls, cross pieces arranged beneath said rings, a sleere carried by each cross: piece and an eye on each sleeve, means connecting the cross pieces with the rings and means connecting the rings with the Walls whereby to raise and lower the rings and Walls.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN F. BITRICH.
