Description

Dec. 9, 1924- C. A. WATSON cAN OPENER.
Filed Jan. 19. 1924 gwventoz 63 J1 14 22 I 50 1 Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES CHESTER A. VATSON, OF BALLINGER, TEXAS.
CAN OPENER.
Application filed January 19, 1924.
taining ticles of food and for removing the metal caps closing bottles containing beverages and food relishes.
The invention provides an implement embodying an adjustable and removable cutter which is formed with a double cutting edge so as to operate eitectively when moved in e ther direction.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be undo; stood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing "from the spirit of the invention.
Referrino to the acompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure l is a side view of a can opener embodying the invention, showing the same applied,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line d l of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a detail view of the device as seen from the bottom side.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The implement comprises a handle 1, which, as shown, consists of a. flat bar or elongated plate having a notch 2 in an end thereof to form a bottle cap remover and having a longitudinal slot 3 in which the lower end of acutter 4 operates. A centering point 5 is provided at the slotted end to pierce the top 5- of a can and form a pivot Serial No. 687,257.
about which the implement is rotated in order to cause the cutter l to cut through the top in a manner well understood.
The cutter e consists of a blade, the active end of which is pointed and oppositely beveled to provide a. double cuttin edge, as shown most clearly in Figure The cutting blade at is mounted in a. holder (5 which consists of a fiat tube, preferably formed by folding opposite edge portions oi a metal strip. The closed side of the tube 6 is provided with a plurality of openings 7 which are adapted to receive the end 8 of a spring 9 mounted upon the holder, whereby to hold the cutter in the required adjusted position. One side of the tube is open, the same resulting :lrom the space formed between the edge portions of the strip which do not come together. A guide is provided at the lower end of the holder to receive the handle 1 and consists of end portions of the tube bent in opposite direct-ions so as to embrace opposite edge portions of the handle as indicated at 8, the extremities oi the bent portions 8 being notched to receive opposite end portions of the cutter, as shown most clearly in Figure It. will be readily understood that the blade 4 may be adjusted to project to a greater or less extent from the handle and by reason of the double cutting edge, the implement will operate effectively when rotated either to the right or to the left. It is also observed that the cutter may be readily removed from the holder to admit of sharpening or to be replaced as required.
What is claimed is:
l. A can opener comprising a handle bar adapted to swing with respect to the can. a holder rising from the bar and overlapping the same to prevent transverse displacement with respect to the bar, and a cutter disposed in the holder and extending through the bar serving to prevent accidental longitudinal displacement of the holder.
2. A can opener comprising a handle bar adapted to swing with respect to the can, a holder disposed transversely of the bar and having means integral therewith overlapping the bar and preventing displacement transversely therefrom, and a cutter carried by the holder and projecting through the bar.
3. A can opener comprising a handle bar adapted to swing with respect to the can, a holder disposed transversely of the bar and having means integral therewith overlapping the bar and preventing displacement transversely therefrom, and a cutter carried by the holder and projecting through the bar, and said means having a notch serving as a guide for the cutter.
4:. A can opener comprising a handle bar adapted to swing. relatively to the can, a holder disposed transversely of the bar. said holder having integral portions in hooked relation to opposite sides of the bar, said ha:-
having a slot therethrough, the extremities of said portions being notched, a cutter carried by the holder extending through said slot and int-0 saidnotehes, and means to adjusta-bly secure the cutter to the holder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
