For the temporary storing-up of wires or for drawing the same through dies it is customary to use in wire drawing-mills metalspools, which are fastened to the drawingshaft. These spools are exposed to great loads. is still hot during such winding-operation and when cooling exercises a shrinking effect on the circumference of the spool. It there fore occurs that such spools distort differently and finally become useless. In almost all drawing-processes a repeated heating of the drawn material isnecessary. The spool and the wire together are then put into a heating-furnace, as soon as wire of smaller diameter has to be treated.
Excepting bronze-spools, which however cannot be used if crudely cast, but which require subsequent highly expensive finishing treatment, it is impossible to manufacture spools for drawing purposes, out of cast-metal. These spools are subjected to rude handling, so that brittle materials cannot be employed. Consequently, the spools must be made from wrought metal, which means a considerable increase in the costprice. In drawing mills of any importance the money invested in these spools plays an appreciable part. v
The object of the present invention is the provision of a spool for drawing mills, possessing a demountable felly or rim and equipped with means allowing an accurate and concentric hoisting on the i drawingshaft. lVith this spool it will then be possible to remove from the machine that part only of the spool which is threaded with wire, and to replace it by an emptyrim.
The latter may be constructed of a drawn tube, i. e. of very light and not brittle material.
The accompanying drawing illustrates, by way of example, one form of spool constructed according to the present invention.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent, respectively: a sectional front view through the axle, a view and a clan view partly in section.
The winding-shaft designated a, turns in frame I) and has a conical portion on which the hub c of the drawing-spool is mounted. This hub carries rim (Z along with it when removed, said rim being constructed from a single piece of tubing and having its ends turned outward. A resilient sleeve connects this rim with hub c as is shown in Figure The sleeve is provided with transverse slots The wire that is threaded on them 6 which are arranged the same distance away from each other. Hub 0 has ccnicalouter surface and the sides of the sleeve are so formed that the latter can be inserted like a Wedge between rim cl and hub 0. This is effected by means of a screw-bolt 7, which forms the end-portion of the drawing-shaft. Screw-bolt f is provided with a shoulder f and a head 7. The inner part of the sleeve is clamped between these two parts. This arrangement permits an easy drawing-oft of the rim, even if, in consequence of the cooling, it has to withstand an enormous concentrically acting tension. Screw-bolt f also serves for coupling the spool on the conical end port-ion of the shaft.
We claim as our invention:
1. A drawing spool, comprising a onepiece conical hub; an annular rim encircling said hub; and a one-piece expansible sleeve also encircling the hub and interposed between the same and the rim, saidsleeve and rim being removable bodily as a ,unit from said hub.
2. A drawing spool, according to claim 1,
in which the sleeve embodies a resilient circumferential wall of wedge-section.
3. A drawing spool, according to claim 1, in which the sleeve embodies a resilient circumferential wall of wedge-section which is transversely slotted, successive slots extending inward from the edges of said wall alternately in opposite directions.

The combination, with a drawing shaft having an axial socket in one end, anda bolt inserted in said socket; of a spool embodying a hub mounted on said shaft end, a rim encircling said hub, and an expansible sleeve mounted on said bolt and also encirclingthe hub, said sleeve being interposed between said hub and the rim; and means on said bolt for clamping said sleeve in place.
5. The combination, with a drawing shaft having an axial socket in one end, and a bolt inserted in said socket and provided wlth a shoulder; of a spool embodying a hub mounted on said shaft end, a rim encircling 6. The combination, with adrawin shaft having an axial socket in one end, {1110 a bolt ill removably inserted in said soeketand provided with a shoulder; of a spool embodymounted on said bolt and also encircling the hub, said sleeve having an end Wall which abuts against said shoulder and a side Wall which is interposed between said hub and the rim; and a head on the bolt for clamping the end wall of the sleeve against said 10 shoulder; said sleeve and riin being removable bodily as a unit With said bolt when the latter is Withdrawn from its socket.
