Be it known that FRANK LAron'rn, a subject of Belgium,residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Purse Retainers, of which'the following is a specification.

My invention Vis an improved design of purse retainer and may be applicable to wal- "lets, pocket Vjewel cases or the like which it is desired to fasten in a pocket so that the article will notbe accidentally lost or stolen. AMy invention is theretaining mechanism and itsmOuDting in various articleswill be readily suggested. Vith my devise it is not necessary to have special fittings in a pocket or the receptacle in which the purse or jewel 'case is carried. My retainer is mounted or installed ina case for carrying valuables and has a number of bolts or lock bars which may be forced outward from the edge and grip the lining of a pocket.

The retaining mechanism will be placed in the case or purse, preferably, between the outside cover and the lining and does not materi ally interfere with the carrying capacity `of the purse. In the broad aspect of my invention ybolts or lock bars are actuated to slide in and out of the case and in their outward Iposition. engage the lining of a pocket or other receptacle. These boltsare, preferably, actuated by lsprings sothat a constant pressure is exercised againstqthe lining. f

In the specific form of my invention illustrated I haveya light rectangular frame, a pair of bell cranks pivoted-to opposite side edgeson the inside, with the bolts or locking .bars carried by the ends of the bell cranks. Each bell crank has a slotted tongue through f which a `pin on an operating rod extends. This rod has springs connected thereto normally tensioned to force the bolts into locking position. A latching device, at the top of the case, holds the rod elevated and the bolts retracted. A i

. My invention will be `more readily understood `from the following V*specification and drawings in which Figure 1 isa lside retainer with the bolts or locking bars in position to engage a pocket or other receptacle. YThe case is shown in section.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of my purse retainer with the `bolts or locking bars in retracted position, so that the purse may be levation v of my purse withdrawn from` a pocket or other receptacle. e

In the drawings 1 represents a light metal frame, preferably, rectangular, having sides 2 and 3, bottom 4 and top 5. Lugs 6 and 7 are rigidly secured to the sides and are split to form pivotal mountings 8 and 9 for the bell cranks 10 and 11. The bell crank 10 has lower arms 12, upper arm 13 and tongue 14; and the bell crank 11 has similar elements as lower arm 15, upper arm 16 and tongue 17.

,The lower locking bolts 18 and 19 are pivotally' connected to thevarms 12 and 15 Lrespectively by .the pintles 20 and 21; and

have sliding supportsin the apertures 22 and 23 in the sides 2 and 3.1'espectively of the frame 1. Theupper locking bolts 24 and 25 are longerrthan the lower bolts and are pivoted to opposite bell cranks asthe bolt 24 is pivoted to the bell crank arm 16 by the pintle 26 and the ybolt 25 is pivoted to the bellV crank arm 13 by the pintle 27. The bolts 24 and 25 have sliding supports in thc apertures 28 and 29 in the sides 2 and 3 respectively ofthe frame 1.l e

The tonguesy 14 and 17 of the bell cranks have slots 30 and 31 respectively, through which slots passes a pin32 rigidly attached to an operating rod 33. A spring 34 is constantly tensioned between the lower end`35 -of the rod 33 and a ho-ok 36 attached to the bottom 4 of the frame 1.- By this mechanism there is a normal force to actuate the bell cranks to the position shown in Figure 1 and thrust the locking bolts into ,operative position.

A latching ,device is provided by mounting the upper end 37 of the rod 33 in a slidyable sleeve 38,*which has a longitudinalslot 39 through which is extended the dog 40 on the end of the rod 33. The sleeve 38 passes through an aperture 41 in the top .5 of the frame 1 andy has a collar 42 limiting its downward movement,` which isfcaused by a spring 43 tensioned between` a hook 44 on the sleeve' 38 and a hook 45 attaehedto the bottom 4 of-the frame 1. Anyy finger grip such as the ring46 may be used tolift the sleeve 38. When Vthe dog engages the .trigger 51 the rod 83 is held elevated, as shown in Figure 2, andthe 'lockling bolts 18, 19, Q4 and 25 are retracted.

The purse may now be readily withdrawn from the pocket 'or receptacle. vlhen the purse is inserted in 'a pocket it is only necessary to move the linger V'grip 59vf'hich actuates the trigger to release the -dog- 40 when the spring 34 will pull 'the rod 33 down and .thrust the lbuttons 61 into contact with the pocket.

2. A purse retainer comprising A1nv combinationa purse, oppositely ypositioned rectilinearlyr slidable bolts extendable therefrom adapted to engage a pockety and afspring actuated mechanism in the Apurse 'to extend said bolts. l

3. A purse retainer comprising incombination-apurse, a `pluralityof .pairs of lockiiigfbolts slidable in substantially a rectilinear line in and out of the lpurse and a spring/actuated mechanism inthe purse to thru'stthebolts outward.

4. A purse retainer comprising in combination a purse,'a plurality of .pairs of locking bolts slidable in substantially a rectilinear line in and out of the purse, a spring actuated vmechanism in the purse tofthrust .the 'bolts outward and means to retract the bolts, said pairs of bolts being inter-connect- 'e'd :to operate simultaneously.

5. A purse retainer as claimed in claim 4 having 4in 'addition a device in the purse to retain the bolts retracted.

A purse 'retainer comprising in combination a purse, a framefor the retainer in thexpurse, rectilinearly sliding locking bolts extending through the frame, a spring normallytensioned to extend thebolts secured to 'the frame, rectilinearly sliding means eX- tending outside the frame lto counteract the spring and retract the bolts. p

11. A retainer as claimed in claim 8 having in addition a sleeve slidable on the rodengaging a 'dog thereonv to retract the bolts and a trigger lconnected to the frame to 'retain the bolts retracted. l

VAretainer for "a fpursecomprising a frameQbell crank levers having a' plurality of arms pivoted to the sides of thelframe, locking :bars slidable through the frame pivotally connected to thearms, a sleeve having a slot slidablethrough the frame, a rod in the sleeve having a *dog projecting through the slot, a loose connection between the rod and an arm of opposite bell Crank levers, a spring tensioned between the rod and the frame, a spring tensioned between the sleeve and the frame and a trigger secured to the frame to engage the said dog.

17. A retainer as vclaimed in claim 16 having an extension of the sleeve outside the l0 frame to slide the sleeve.

18. A retainer as claimed in claim 16 having a trigger release device operable from outside the frame.

19. A retaineras claimed in claim 16 having an extension of the sleeve outside the 'frame to slide the Sleeve and a trigger release device operable from outside the frame.
