Application filed June 25, 1923. serial; No. 647,440.
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR W. Rrvnrr and BENJAMINVEINBERGER, citizens of the United States, and residents ofl St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Vorktable, of which the following! is' a specification.
This invention relates to a work table, and embodies new and useful subject matter whereby the form of the table may be varied when it is desired to use the table for different purposes.
An object of the'invention is to provide lan improved work table comprising duplicate and interchangeable supports, duplicate and interchangeable and removable connections, and means for securing the supports and connections together to provide a flat top table, or a table with a central trough or receptacle as desired. y
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securing the supports together side by side so as to provide a table of narrow width, and for connecting the supports in spaced relationshipso as to provide a table of greater width as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a work table that may optionally be transformed into a fiat top table of narrow' width, a wide fiat top table, a wide table adapted to support the work at each side and provided with a longitudinal receptacle between the side work supporting portions, or a table having a iiat work supporting portion at one side and a longitudinal receptacle at the other side.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved work table embodying the advantages and improvements hereinafter disclosed and specially designed and adapted for use in garment factories or elsewhere, or wherever numerous-worlnnen operate on the same or adjacent tables and wherever the structure hereinafter disclosed would be advantageous.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which-r Fig. l is a transverse sectional view showf ing our. invention inthe form of a wide fiat topltablen .j
Fig is a similar sectional view showing eur` invention transformed. by inverting the transverse connections to providefa wide table having a work supporting portion along each side and a longitudinal receptacle between the work supporting portions.
Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view showing our invention. transformed to` vprovide a flat top table of narrow width, the transformation being effected by removing the inner connections of' Figs. l andi'Q and seuring the side .supports together-'sideby sic e.
Fig. lv is a transverse sectional view of the invention transformed into a table having a work'supporting top-alongone longitudinal edge and a longitudinal'receptacle along the opposite edge.
Figl is a view showing one ofthe top supporting members detached.
Fig. 6 is a view showing one ofthe connecting members connecting the supports for the opposite sides of the table andvwhich is reversible for use in aftable vflat throughout its width or for a table having flat work supporting portions along its longitudinal edges, and a longitudinal receptacle between the work supporting 'portions Fig. 7 is a view showing the two-'members of a supporting leg.
Fig. 8 is a detached view of the connecting device used to connect adjacent table supports in forming a table of narrow widthi Fig. 9 is a detachedviewfof ya supporting bracket that may be attached to th'e table in any of its forms.
An important feature of the invention consists in the construction and arrangement by which the parts are readily adjustable and interchangeable to provide a table having any of thefforms shown in the drawings. Another important feature of the invention is in the construction of the `parts whereby they are`readily interchangeable from one position to another and having no arbitrary locations or positions. It will be understood that the parts may be varied as to'their design.
The legs 1 of the table comprise upright members preferably of metal of appropriate width and thickness 'forthe purpose for which the table isfintended and.4 provided with baseportion's 2 tofrest uponi-.heA Hoor. It desired. the :may of relatively thin metal and flanged at their edges as shown so that no sharp corners will be presented and yet obtain maximum strength. To permit the top supporting members to be raised and lowered to vary the height of the table the upper ends of the legs 1 may be provided with slots 3 for the reception of the fastening devices holding the top supporting member in connection with the legs. In the embodiment of the invention shown each of the legs has an extended part l that is overlapped by the lower end of an inwardly and upwardly extended curved arm 5, said arm being secured to the extended portion by a releasable bolt 6. The upper end of the arm 5 terminates in about the same horizontal plane as the upper end of the leg 1 to which it is attached and is provided with a slot 7 matching the slot 3 in the leg. Thus it may be said that each leg is composite, being made up of the two detachable parts 1 and 5. The legs thus constructed are arranged in pairs when assembled in a table, the two legs of each pair being opposite each other and at opposite sides of the table,
For a fiat table the top supporting members are of duplicate construction and are readily interchangeable from one position to another so that no choice is necessary in the selection of'said members in assembling the table. As shown each member comprises the frame-like structure including a horizontal upper portion 8 having a depending arm 9 at its inner end and a depending arm 10 between its inner and outer ends, said arm 10 having a vertical slot 11 matching the slot 3 in the leg 1 when the arm 10 is placed against the side of the leg 1. The arm 9 has a hole 12 therethrough that registers with the slot 7 in the arm 5 of the leg when the parts are assembled. rEhe arms 9 and 10 of the top supporting members are preferably connected by a part 13 adding strength and rigidity. Bolts 14 pass through the slots 3 and 11 and constitute removable fasteners for securing the top supporting members to the legs.
In the construction of the tables shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the top supporting members at opposite sides are connected by connecting members which are reversible to provide a wide flat top table as shown in Fig. 1, or a. wide table with a longitudinal receptacle midway between its opposite edges as shown in Fig. 2. Each of said connecting members comprises a part 15 of appropriate length, diverging arms 16 united with the part 15 at their inner ends and having webs 17 forming a connection between the outer ends of the part 15 and the outer ends of the arms 16. Outwardly extended arms 18 over` lap the arm 9 of the top supporting members and are secured thereto by removable bolts 19, one of which passes through the hole 12 in the arm 9 and through the slot 7 in the arm 5, thereby securing the three overlapped parts 5-9-18 together.
ln the embodiment shovn there are three arms 1S at each end of the connecting membei', two of said three arms at each end being fastened by the bolts 19 while the hole in the other arm 18 receives a lug 2O on the arm 9. Thus the table top support for each pair of legs is made up of the three detachably connected parts described, two of said parts being duplicates and the connecting member for said parts being invertible from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, the table top in Fig. 1 being flat throughout the width of the table and the table top shown in Fig. 2 being formed to provide a longif tudinal work or machine supporting portion along each side and a longitudinal trough or receptacle between said supporting portions. rlhe inversion of the connecting members will be readily understood from the drawing, the securing bolts 19 being applied as shown. rllie slots and T permit the top supporting members to be raised and lowered to vary the height of the table, as desired. The table top may be fastened to the supporting members by releasable bolts 21 as shown, or otherwise as desired.
The table as shown in Fig. 3 is of narrow width, the invertible connecting members being omitted and the top supporting mem bers for the side portions of the table being placed and connected close together. rlhe connecting device for each pair of top supporting members, as shown, comprises a plate 22 (Figs. 3 23 for reeiving the bolts 19 and a pair of holes 24; for receiving the lugs 20. rl`he height of the narrow table may be varied as desired by raising or lowering the top supporting members which is made possible by the provision of the slot-s 3 and 7.
1n the form of the table shown in Fig. e a single series of top supporting members are utilized, the same being connected to the legs along one side of the table only. rlhis provides a table with a longitudinal machine and work support along only one side of the table while a longitudinal trough or receptacle is provided at the opposite side. The support for the longitudinal trough or receptacle comprises a casting or member including a longitudinal portion 25, an inclined arm` 26 having its lower end united with the part 25, a web 27 uniting the upper end of the arm 26 with the inner end of the part 25, and three arms 28 corresponding to the three arms 18 of the connecting member shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and similarly attached to the top supporting member. rl`he part 25 has depending arms 29 overlapping the leg 1 and the arm 5 respectively, and provided with slots 30 matching the slots 3 and and 5) having four holes 7 and receiving the removable bolts 31 by which said parts are secured together. An upward extension 32 at the outer end of the part supports the wall 33 of the longitudinal trough or receptacle, the bottom wall 34 being supported by the part 25, and the inclined wall 35 being supported by the arm As stated, the table is designed and adapted to support machines and the work upon which the machines operate. In the case of garment manufacturers, for instance, sewing machines may be mounted upon the table and the cloth placed in convenient position upon the work supporting parts of the tables. Such sewing machines are mechanically operated and the operating mechanism therefor may be supported by brackets as shown in Figs. 1 and 9, said brackets including base portions 36 secured to the parts S and 13 of the top supports by bolts 37; and arms 38 for receiving any appropriate part to be supported thereby.
From the foregoing it will be seen that our invention may be readily transformed for various uses; is easily assembled in any of its forms and may be readily changed from one form to another. The corresponding parts at opposite sides of the table being of duplicate construction, that is being in pairs, no choice or selection is required to obtain the proper parts in assembling the table since the parts of each pair are alike and are interchangeable. The invention obtains all of its intended objects and purposes in an efficient manner and may be modified in numerous particulars without departure from the principle and scope thereof. We do not restrict ourselves unessentially, but what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A work table comprising pairs of legs, a top supporting member attached to the upper end of each leg, and a reversible connecting member connecting the top supporting members of each pair of legs, said connecting member in one position thereof having its upper edge in alinement with the upper edges of the connecting members and in the other position thereof having its upper edge below the upper edges of the connecting members.
2. A work table comprising pairs of legs, a top supporting member attached to the upper end of each leg, a reversible connecting member connecting theV top supporting members of each pair of legs, said connecting member in one position thereof having its upper edge in alinement with the upper edges of the connecting members and in the other position thereof having its upper edge below the upper edges of the connecting members, and means for supporting the top supporting members and the connecting.
corresponding arm, and a detachable con-y necting member connecting the top supporting members, and being reversible so that in one position thereof its upper edge is in alinement with the upper edges of the connecting members and in the other position thereof a portion of its upper edge is below the upper edges of the connecting members.
5. A work table comprising a pair of legs,
an inwardly and upwardly extending arm removably attached to each leg, a top supporting member attached to each leg and the corresponding arm, a detachable connecting member connecting the top supporting members, and means for securing said top supporting members and said connecting` member to said legs and arms at different elevations.
