Description
A. R. BARNETT CLAMPING DEVICE Filed Nov. 1924 five/76 0f- 07%)]2 170/7768? Patented Sept. 15, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN R. BARNETT, F MERCER, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OFJONE-HALF TO ODUS ALLEN MOORE, OF MERCER, MISSOURI.
CLAMPING DEVICE.
Application filed November 11, 1924. Serial No. 749,200.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN RILEY BAR- NETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mercer, in the county of Mercer and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanymg drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in clamping devices and has relation more particularly to a device of this gen eral character for maintaining a box lid in applied position and it is an object of the invention toprovide a device 01' this kind embodying novel and improved means whereby the same may be readily and conveniently operated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is adapted to engage a box body and the box lid or cover for effectively holding such lid or cover in applied position and which device when applied also provides means whereby the box may be readily handled.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved clamping device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in perspective illustrating a clamping device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View taken through the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary View in perspective of the upper end portion of the lever.
My'invention as herein disclosed is particularly adapted for use in connection with an egg case and as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes the box body part of such case or the like which is provided along the upper margin of each of its end walls 1 with a ledge or shoulder 2.. (loacting with the box body part is a box cover or lid C of a conventional type.
My improved clamp comprises an elongated member 3 angular in cross section and which when applied, has one flange a overlying the adjacent end portion of the cover or lid C and'with its second flange 6 overlying the adjacentend wall 1 above the ledge or shoulder 2.
Atits centralportion the flange b has secured thereto and depending therefrom a plate 4 having its lower marginal portion provided with an outstanding arcuate. rack 5. The upper end portion of the plate 4 is provided with an extension plate 6 formed to overlie the upper portion of the plate 4 to provide a supporting bracket. Secured to and bridging the space between the plate 4 and the bracket 6 is a rivet or pin 7 with which is pivotally connected an end portion of a rock arm 8, said rock arm being arcuate in form and extending beyond opposite sides of the pin or rivet 7. The inner end portion of the rock arm 8 is bifurcated and extending within the resultant kerf 9 is an end portion of an arm 10 the same being pivotally connected by the pin or rivet 11. This arm 10 extends downwardly with respect to the plate 4 and is provided with an inwardly disposed jaw 12 which extends through the vertically disposed slot 14 produced in the plate 4. This jaw 12 is adapted to engage from below the ledge or shoulder 2 so that upon upward movement of the-arm 10 the device in its entirety will effectively clamp and hold the end wall 1 of the box body part and the adj acent end portion of the box cover or lid C.
The outer end portion of the arm 8 is provided with an angular extension 15 provided along one marginal portion with a lip 16 which is adapted to engage the rack 5 whereby the device may be effectively locked in desired clamping position. This lip 16 may be readily disengaged from the racl: 5 by exerting slight outward or lateral movement to the extension 15.
The flange b of the member 3 at opposite sides of the plate 4 has hingedly connected therewith, as at 17, the extremities From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious-that a cliampingrde' vice constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason oithe ieonvenience andfaciliity with which it maybe assembled and operated,-amd it will also be obvious thaemy'invent-ion :is susceptible of some change and modification without departing "from :the
principles :and spirit'cthereof-and 'for"th:is
reason I do'not'wish $0 the .understood as limiting myself- 150' the precise :arrangem'ent anddormation .of'ithe several parts herein' shown in carrying out mydnvention in practice except 1 :as hereinafter claimed,
I claim p 1.- In :combination with, a container provided with :a' ledge and a coverforsaid.
container, :a member angnlarwinuciioss "section, one flange of WlIICll b'elngedaptedxto overlie an end portion'zof :the cover andthe second flangeto ov'erlie the container-above the ledge, and means canried :by the :mem-
