.Be it known that I, Grmsrna G. HoWn, a citizen. of th'e United States, residing at New 'Kensington, in the county of WVestmoreland, Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wringers, ofwhich :the following is a specification. i a

The present invention. proposes to provide .a quick releasefor the rolls readily operable, from either. side of the Wringer, which will efliciently. h'oldthe rolls under compression at normal times, but which will beeasy to. operate in an emergency. l

Formed in each of the members 5 and 61is an opening 17, theopenin'gs being in alinement. Passing through the openings are the handle portions 18 of a releasing frame 19, which frame surrounds the block 13. The frame has trunnions 19 that bear in parts of the lugs 14-, as shown in Fig. 2, so that, upon the application of pressure to either of the handles, the frame may be rocked from its normal horizontal position. Springs 20 passed through the trunnions and secured inlugs21 on members 5 and 6 may be used to: urge the releasing frame On the frame in vertical alinement with the. trunnions and at each side of block 13, is a vertical arm or rib 22 which projects through the top, of the frame and which is provided withlugs23. hen the frame is in a horizontal position, the lugs overhang ribs 13 ofthe block 13, and prevent upward, movement of the block. consequent ly, when screw 15 is turned, inthe proper direction, pressure may be applied to spring 12, block 13 being held against upward movement, due to the corresponding re-action on lugs 23 of the rocking frame; If the frame is rocked in either direction, arms 22 move in an arc and the lugs23 are moved out of engagement with the tops of, ribs 18 and the block is free to move upward, thereby relieving the pressure on the spring. In order to limit the upward movement ofthe block, a pin 24: is provided therein, which'projects into a guide 25 in the frame. VVhen'the pin reaches the end of the guide, the upwardmovement of the block is stopped. I
The lower end The release as thus constructed is simple of construction, and may be operated in an emergency with very little effort. By rea son of the two extensions 18 or handle portions, the release may be operated from either side of the wringer by downward or upward pressure. The handles are of sufficient length to enable the operator to bear down on them with his head or other part of his body, should he be unable to use his hands.
I claim as my invention:
1. A wringer including a supporting frame, a roll movable vertically in said frame, a vertically movable block in said frame, a shaft threaded in said block and having a handle portion projecting beyond the frame, means engaged by the threaded shaft for transmitting pressure from said shaft to the roll, and a latch for normally holding said block against upward movement, whereby pressure may be applied to said roll, said latch comprising a supporting member pivotally mounted in the frame on a horizontal axis and rotatable in either direction on its axis, and having arms thereon adapted to move through a vertical are when the member is rocked, said latch being provided with means thereon for engaging the block when it is in normal position, said means being moved out of engagement with the block by the arcuate travel of said arms when the member is rocked in either direction from normal position.
2. A wringer including a supporting frame, a roll movable vertically in said frame, a vertically movable block in said frame, a shaft threaded in said block and having a handle portion projecting beyond the frame, means engaged by the threaded shaft for transmitting pressure from said shaft to the roll, and a latch for normally a holding said block against upward move ment, whereby pressure may be applied to said roll, said latch comprising a member pivotally mounted in the frame on a hori zontal axis and movable in either direction in a vertical arc from normal position, said member having means thereon for normally engaging the block, said means being movable through an are out of block engaging position when the member is rocked in either direction on its axis, and operating means for the latch.
3. A wringer including frame, frame,
a supporting a roll movable vertically in said a vertically movable block in said frame, a shaft threaded in said block and having a handle portion projecting beyond the frame, means engaged by the threaded shaft for transmitting pressure from said shaft to the roll, and a latch for normally holding said block against upward move-v ment whereby pressure may be applied to said roll, said latch comprising a pivotally supported member mounted in the frame disposed transversely of the wringer frame and having handle portions projecting from both sides of the frame, said member having means thereon for normally engaging the block to hold it against upward move-V ment, said means being movabl through an are out of block engaging position when pressure is applied to either of said handles sufficiently to rock said member.
4:. A wringer including a supporting frame, a roll movable vertically in said frame, a vertically movable block in said frame, a shaft threaded in said block and having a handle portion projecting beyond the frame, means engaged by the threaded shaft for transmitting pressure from said shaft to the roll, and a latch for normally holding said block against upward movement whereby pressure may beappplied to said roll, said latch comprising a pivotally supported member provided with a horizontally extending handle mounted in the frame to swing in a vertical arc and having means thereon for normally engaging the block, said means being movable through an are out of block engaging position when the member is rocked by moving the handle either up or down from its normal position, and means for urging said member toward its normal position when rocked in either direction.
5. A wringer including a supportin frame, a roll movable Vertically in said frame, a vertically movable block in said frame, a shaft threaded in said block and having a handle portion projecting beyond the frame, means engaged by the threaded shaft for transmitting pressure from said shaft to the roll, and a latch for normally holding said block against upward movement whereby pressure may be applied to said roll, said latch comprising a releasing member provided with an operating extension having horizontal trunnions thereon pivotally supported in the wringer frame whereby the frame may be rocked in a vertical arc, said releasing member having lugs thereon for engaging the block when the releasing member is in its normal horizontal position, said lugs being movable through an are out of block engaging position when the releasing member is rocked in either direction, and springs engagingthe trunnions for returning the member to its normal horizontal position. 6. A wringer comprising a frame, a roll movable vertically in the frame, a vertically reciprocable block in the frame having laterally extending ribs projecting therefrom, said block being non-rotatable in the frame, a shaft threaded through the block, means against which the lowermost end of the shaft contacts for transmittingpressure to the rolls, a centrally apertured latch gagement with the ends of the ribs when the member mounted in the frame on a horilatch member is rocked in either direction zontal axis to swing in a vertical are, and from normal, and an operating extension through which the block and threaded shaft on said latch member.
